OnePlus is expanding its portfolio with its new foldable smartphone, rumored to launch sometime this year. Currently, it’s an unnamed device, and rumors suggest it will be heavily based on the OPPO Find N2 foldable series. One named thrown out there already though is the OnePlus Open. OnePlus has some heavy competition this year for what will be their first foldable phone, which is expected to be called the OnePlus V Fold. The Google Pixel Fold and Samsung’s Flip & Fold coming to the foldable market around a similar time.

Here’s what we know about the upcoming OnePlus Foldable and its release date.

OnePlus Foldable release date prediction

OnePlus announced the foldable smartphone at the MWC 2023 and said it is on its way. However, a few weeks earlier, the company held the Cloud 11 event, where they teased, “Something Phenomenal is Coming,” which hinted at the company’s first foldable device. They also specified the launch time Q3 2023: July to September.

This is obviously quite a broad window of time, but given it’s the first device of its kind we don’t have a great deal of historical data to go off to make a more precise estimate. There are rumors around however that we can delve into. One of these rumors comes from prolific leaker Max Jambor on Twitter, who claims that the OnePlus Foldable is launching in August on the tweet pictured below.

Considering we’ve only had a limited amount of official information from OnePlus, any kind of leak is worth investigating. The initial rumor came out pretty early, without too much to back it up. However, Max Jambor delivered a follow up tweet confirming what is now looking to be called the OnePlus Open or OnePlus V Fold. Plenty of outlets have been reporting on this leak, such as AndroidAuthority. So, the launch date should be coming on August 29th, with availability arriving sometime in the following weeks.

OnePlus Foldable predicted specs

*UPDATE*

Following an update from NotebookCheck and 91mobiles that the OnePlus Fold is likely to be the global version of the OPPO Find N3, this means the two devices could be seeing the exact same specs. We’d argue that OnePlus has been a more successful brand outside of China, so it makes sense that OPPO are working together with their subsidiary to separate the branding in this way.

As such, the rumored specs are the same, though we don’t currently know if there will be any slight variation based on current predictions. We’ve put together a list of some of the key rumored specs just below.

  • Display: 8″ foldable OLED screen, QHD+ (2K) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate / 6.5″ cover display, FHD (1080p), 120Hz OLED
  • Processor / chipset: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
  • Camera: Triple rear camera set-up – 50MP wide, 48MP ultra-wide, 32MP periscope / front selfie camera twin 32MP wide
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Storage: 512GB space
  • Battery: 4,800 mAh battery size & 80W wired charging

*Older specs rumors*

The first hardware rumor about the OnePlus Foldable came from an Indian tech website, PriceBaba, in collaboration with a popular reporter and leaker, Yogesh Brar, in April 2022. The story said the new OnePlus foldable would be a copy of OPPO’s Find N. However, the original Find N is a year old, so the OnePlus foldable will likely follow the Find N2 or its sibling Find N2 Flip. Either way, it’s likely to be a flagship phone and stand out from the rest of the OnePlus line-up.

In terms of specs, the Find N2 features the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, but the upcoming OnePlus Foldable could actually jump up to Gen 2 of the chipset, as that’s the current top dog. Previous OnePlus phones such as the OnePlus 11 featured a fantastic camera, and the Find N2 features an amazing 32MP selfie camera – contrast that with the 4MP from the Galaxy Z Fold 4. If the trend continues with OnePlus phones, we could see something similar, especially for the rear camera at the very least.

Another biggest leak came from the Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station. The Weibo post indicates the OnePlus foldable will feature a 2K large foldable screen. The post confirms the OnePlus Foldable will be a book-style foldable device with a lower 1792 x 1920 resolution display, so it is not an exact copy of the Find N2.

OnePlus Foldable price speculation

We don’t have solid price info about the OnePlus Foldable, but rumors suggest the device will be heavily based on the OPPO Find N series. So, we can use the prices of the OPPO Find N2 and OPPO Find N2 Flip as a guide.

OPPO Find N2: ¥7,999 (approx $1,150/£930)

OPPO Find N2 Flip: £849/€1,199

The OnePlus foldable could have similar pricing to the OPPO products listed above.

OnePlus Foldable design renders leaked? – Book or flip folding form?

When it comes to foldable phones, there are a couple of differing design philosophies. What we mean by this is will the OnePlus Foldable be ‘book’ fold (much like the Galaxy Z Fold) or ‘flip’ fold, which is akin to the Galaxy Z Flip – we’re talking vertical vs horizontal folding / placement of the hinge. The flip variety is commonly known as a clamshell phone.

Well, this is yet to be announced. The design is even more ambiguous by the fact that leaks show that the company may be considering both, as the devices have trademarked names for them in China: OnePlus V Fold and OnePlus V Flip, indicating the possibility of two foldable smartphones. Journalist Mukul Sharma spotted the trademarks and reported the company has already started internal testing.

Leaked renders to emerge so far show us that a book fold style design is most likely, but we can’t yet rule out the possibility of both designs making it to the market in some way or another based on the recent trademarks. Check out the renders below, courtesty of OnLeaks & Smartprix.

OnePlus Foldable FAQs

Will the OnePlus Foldable be an exact copy of the OPPO Find N series?

Current rumors show that the OnePlus Foldable phone is practically the global release version of the OPPO Find N3, meaning it is likely to be a close or exact copy to the upcoming Find N3.

However, some earlier rumors mentioned that specs may not be exactly the same, but close to it – this may be outdated speculation by now though.

Are OPPO and OnePlus the same company?

No, they are not the same company. However, they are both subsidiaries of BBK Electronics.
