AMD’s 9800X3D should arrive on November 7th, 2024, following a teaser trailer from Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President at AMD.
With the AMD Ryzen 9000 series release in the rearview mirror, it’s time to turn our attention to the highly anticipated X3D series – specifically the Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date. It seems like a lot of people are waiting for X3D, as indicated by lacklustre 9000 series sales on launch – which, if truth be told, wasn’t all down to the underwhelming performance uplift when comparing generation-on-generation chips.
X3D CPUs are the supercharged gaming equivalent to the standard “X” series of AMD processors. Though perfectly capable, X3D uses 3D caching technology to increase gaming performance. And because of this, they are often considered the best CPUs for gaming. In reality, it’s far more complicated than that, but you get the idea. When exactly can we expect the 9800X3D to land in our hands?
The latest rumours show that the 9800X3D will cost $30 more than the 7800X3D on launch, putting it at $479, which is a big ask. But to be fair, a recent Geekbench leak puts the 9800X3D’s performance 24% ahead of the 7800X3D in synthetic workloads. And as we know, the X3D chips perform far better in gaming workloads. This price was later confirmed by AMD in an Email.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D release date
After a slew of exciting 9800X3D release date rumours, we finally have something more concrete from AMD. While the 9800X3D isn’t 100% confirmed just yet, Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President of AMD, did release a trailer for the 9000X3D series – stating it will launch on November 7th. This confirms some of the earlier rumors we saw, but doesn’t 100% confirm that it’s the 9800X3D.
This appears to track with the announcement of the 7000X3D series that was also announced at CES 2023. If you ask us, this is a smart move, considering the recent release of Intel Core Ultra CPUs. It’s likely AMD is adopting the ‘wait and see’ approach to these CPUs, maybe in hopes of strengthening the X3D chips at the last minute, when Intel’s newer chips might weaken. But apparently, now the 9900X and 9950X have some new technology, so we might be getting the 9800X3D to tide us over until the release of the rest of the X3D series.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D price confirmed by AMD
We know now, thanks to rumours that the 9800X3D will launch at $30 more than the 7800X3D did when it first launched. That puts the 9800X3D at $479. Hoang Anh Phu added a post on X. For those unaware, Hoang Anh Phu has a strong track record with his leaks regarding several AMD product plans, which leads us to believe that this information might be the closest we’ll get to the final pricing.
A fwe days later, AMD confirmed the price of the 9800X3D in an email to subscribers. It looks like this price for the 9800X3D is set in stone.
Taking advantage of the 9000X3D release
It’s also possible that the release of the X3D CPUs could cause the price of the base 9000 series and 7000X3D series to drop (depending on their success) as they try to get rid of old stock. You could use this to your advantage if you want to pick up a base 9000 series or don’t mind being a generation behind.
According to Camelcamelcamel, we did see a baseline price drop (with a few fluctuations), of several 7000 series CPUs after the release of 7000X3D.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D predicted specifications
Sadly, nothing official on the specifications front yet – however, there are some juicy rumors to get your teeth into. The latest suggests that AMD is set to bring changes to the 3D V-cache technology with the next-gen Ryzen 7 9800X3D. A recently leaked delidded image of the 9800X3D revealed differences in the 3D V-Cache design compared to previous iterations. Unlike previous models, the 9800X3D seems to lack visible 3D V-Cache traces on the CCD front and instead employs the 3D V-Cache stack underneath the Zen 5 CCD
While the benefits of a second-generation 3D V-Cache technology remain uncertain, we do have intriguing details about the higher clock speeds that could boost gaming performance with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The next-gen processor is said to feature a 4.7 GHz base clock, a 500 MHz uplift over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D’s 4.2 GHz base clock. The max boost clock is reportedly 5.2 GHz, making it 200 MHz faster than the 7800X3D’s 5.0 GHz max boost.
These enhancements suggest that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could surpass even the best gaming CPU, the 7800X3D. In fact, leaked marketing slides show that the new chip is expected to deliver an 8% boost in gaming performance and a 15% improvement in multi-threaded workloads compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Apart from gaming, we have also seen content creation benchmarks for the 9800X3D potentially showing better performance than the 9700X and 7800X3D
We’re also seeing memory improvements with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is expected to support high-end memory speeds of up to DDR5-8800 MT/s. The cherry on top is the new AGESA firmware that motherboard vendors are rolling out with their BIOS updates featuring AGESA 1.2.0.2A. This new firmware is specifically focused on X3D chips and introduces features like X3D Turbo Mode and optimizations tailored for the next-gen Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
With significant improvements in the pipeline, particularly for gaming, this could spell bad news for the recently launched Core Ultra 200 lineup, which hasn’t delivered promising results for gamers.
Below you will see a table of predicted specifications of the 9800X3D
Specifications | Ryzen 7 9800X3D (predicted) | Ryzen 7 9700X | Ryzen 7 7800X3D |
Cores | 8 | 8 | 8 |
Threads | 16 | 16 | 16 |
Cache | 96/128MB | 32MB | 96MB |
TDP | 120W | 65W | 120W |
The 9800X3D will likely have similar specs to the 7800X3D, just be Zen 5-based, and have slightly higher clock speeds. And of course, all the IPC improvements the new CPU core architecture brings. One of the downsides of X3D is the sensitivity to high temperatures and speeds that the cache faces. So, with that in mind, unless AMD has improved on this further as they did with 7000X3D over 5000X3D, we’ll likely see some overclocking limitations again.
It is presumed that the 9000X3D will also use a dual CCD design to try to mitigate the limitations placed on the CPU by the cache, further reinforced by the fact that the 9000 series already takes full advantage of a dual CCD design. This is done by attaching the X3D cache to one CCD, so that only “half” of the CPU is limited. CCD latency was recently addressed in an AGESA update if you were aware of that issue.
It’s not a lot to go off, but as we said, this thing is a ghost, which is true for the rest of the 9000X3D series. But if AMD has made further tweaks to the V-cache, we could see AMD propeller to the top of the performance leaderboard again.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D packaging leak
We’ve got a packaging leak courtesy of Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube. This image is said to come from promotional material to AMD partners for the imminent release of the 9800X3D. There’s not too much difference and it follows the same design philosophy we’ve seen over the last few releases. But we can’t help but feel that the orange seems brighter.
Do you need a new motherboard for the 9800X3D?
Technically, no, you do not. These CPUs were likely intended to be used with the upcoming X870 motherboards, as was the rest of the 9000 series. However, your X3D CPU will be fully supported by any AM5 socket motherboard, be that A620 or the X870.
The new motherboards do feature some nice-to-have bits and updated connectivity for faster communication, but they come at a price. And with the X3D likely being limited to how much you can overclock them, it’s doubtful you’ll need a robust surplus power delivery system, such as the ones spotted on new MSI motherboards.
Final word
So, it looks like the 9800X3D will be hitting shelves on the 7th of November – meaning there’s not long to go before we can get our hands on this highly-anticipated CPU. It’ll be interesting to see how the launch of the 9800X3D goes – especially when you factor in just how lacklustre Intel’s recent launch was. It certainly looks like Intel has handed the keys to an entire generation of buyers to AMD with this one – let’s see if they can capitalize.
