The technique is the subject of considerable contention as some players label it as cheating and consider it an exploit entirely void of skill. We’ll leave the moral judgment up to you, but for now, we’re going to teach you how to drag click and give some recommendations on the best mouse for drag clicking.

While the technique is undeniably controversial in certain circles, we feel the need to play devil’s advocate here as it’s far from an aimbot or clicking macro, it’s simply a novel way to achieve far higher CPS than would be possible with the traditional click we are all used to.

What is drag clicking?

The term ‘drag click’ refers to a specific technique used to drastically increase your CPS (clicks per second) in games. It is of particular value in Minecraft, where clicking rapidly is integral to the game. This method is used primarily by the competitive PvP community to increase the speed at which the player can land blows on an opponent.

How to drag click

It may be a slightly tricky technique to learn, but it shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes to an hour, and once it becomes muscle memory, you’ll only get better and better with time. If you’re particularly partial to playing Minecraft, it’s a very useful technique to learn. Additionally, it might help you out in other games.

How to do it

The concept of this technique relies on the friction between your finger and the mouse, when you apply just the right level of pressure and just the right angle, it causes your finger to ‘skip’ over the mouse button, this can actuate it many times a second, no macro needed.

So, let’s get to it. From our testing, we’ve found what we think to be the best method and it’s very quick to learn too. Additionally, it works on multiple mice that we’ve tested so it’s probably universally applicable. The steps and a diagram can be found below are below.

How to drag click on any mouse

Step

1

Use the correct hand position

Position your hand above the mouse with your finger of choice hanging down towards the mouse button with the tip/pad of the finger lightly contacting the mouse button.

You may want to use your middle finger as it has a larger surface area than the index finger.

Step

2

Performing a drag click

Drag your finger forward along the mouse button, varying the pressure until you feel your finger sort of ‘skip’ along the button.

Once you get the skipping feeling slightly increase the pressure until you hear the mouse clicking with every skip.

Step

3

Rinse and repeat

Rinse and repeat until you can consistently hear and feel rapid clicks every time you drag your finger along the button.

Additionally, you might find it easier to drag your finger along the outer or inner edge of the button, as opposed to the center.

Step

4

Test your skills

Once you’re starting to get a hang for it, you can go ahead and test your newfound CPS speed over at CPS Test.

Best drag clicking mouse

Conventional wisdom suggests that the best mice to use for this technique are mice where the mouse buttons are not separate from the rest of the shell, for example, the Razer Deathadder V2 and the Corsair M65. The reason for this is that mice constructed like this typically have a faster bounce-back time. This helps maximize the CPS gained from this technique. We’ve listed some of the most suitable gaming mice for this below. Additionally, you’ll benefit strongly from mice with a less-smooth texture on the buttons, or you can add grip tape to practically any mouse to produce the same effect.

Pros and Cons of Drag clicking

Given the aforementioned controversy surrounding the concept of drag clicking, there are a few things you should consider before committing to this contentious click craft.

Pros

  • Far higher CPS, especially when extensively practiced
  • Useful in many games aside from Minecraft, for example the Diablo series and other similar ARPGs.
  • It’s weirdly fun for fidgeting

Cons

  • Some minecraft servers have outlawed the practice of drag clicking
  • It can reduce the lifespan of your mouse.
  • It can very occasionally be registered as a hack, similar to an aimbot and get you banned. Not often but it’s been known to happen

How to drag click: final word

There we have it, folks, we’ve explained drag clicking. What it is, how to do it, and given a brief overview of the contentious and controversial reputation this clever trick has.
