Google Pixel Watch 2 release date, specs, price prediction
Is the Google Pixel Watch 2 on its way? And when?
Google Pixel Watch
Google Pixel 7a
Google Pixel Tablet
We’ve gathered everything there is to know about the Google Pixel Watch 2 release date. The Google I/O event is still occupying our minds, so we want to take a look at how the Pixel Watch 2 is shaping up right now.
We hoped to hear more news regarding this wearable tech during the event, but we instead saw more focus on the upcoming Pixel 7a and Pixel Tablet as they are closer to their respective release dates. That means there wasn’t too much to get excited by regarding the Pixel Watch 2 itself during the keynote – but there have been important developments closely related to it.
The original Pixel Watch launched alongside the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro smartphones, so we expect the upcoming 2nd generation to do the same with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
Google Pixel Watch 2 release date – current prediction
So, how about a prediction for the Google Pixel Watch 2 release date? As we mentioned, it’s highly likely that we’ll be seeing the Watch 2 arrive at the same time as the Pixel 8. Every single Google Pixel phone has released in October, and we don’t expect any different this year.
So, with that in mind, we can safely predict that the Pixel Watch 2 will release in early-late October 2023, at the same time as the Google Pixel 8 smartphone. For reference, the Pixel Watch 1 released on October 13th, 2022. Although there was no further confirmation of this during the recent event, we highly doubt that this release window will change. Unless a massively unexpected delay shakes things up.
Will there be a Google Pixel Watch 2?
We’re almost certain that a Google Pixel Watch 2 will be on the way. Especially since Google have been showing off upgrades to Wear OS, which the original Pixel Watch runs on. The market for wearables is wide open for Google, since they still have plenty of room to grow with only one Pixel Watch under their belt at the moment. It’s possible to fight off the giants like the Apple Watch series, or the Samsung Galaxy Watch line-up.
Of course, their acquisition of Fitbit some time ago gives them reason to put more resources into this area, as integration between the two brands is possible. Especially since Fitbit is a well-recognized player in the industry.
Google Pixel Watch 2 rumored specs
There’s still some way to go before we’ll get to see the Google Pixel Watch 2. First of all, we expect the Watch 2 to be moving on to Wear OS 4, as tons of new features and apps were revealed for the wearable tech operating system during Google I/O. Much more on that below if you want to learn more. We also put together a few features which we hope to see, and the early Wear OS 4 reveal seems to be taking us in the right direction.
Right now, there isn’t a whole lot else currently known about the Pixel Watch 2, especially when it comes to hardware specs. However, we can obviously expect the device to build upon it’s first generation model. There are some rumored specs scattered around the web, but nothing too concrete at the moment, no substantial leak or rumors just yet! We can list a few things for certain at the moment.
- Built-in GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer, & ECG
- At least 32GB of storage
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 or newer
It’s also likely that the dome-shaped display of the be back for the Watch 2. Hopefully we get to see some thinner bezels, as tech has always been moving this way to maximize screen space.
It’s also reported that Google are working on two different watches for this coming Fall, as well-known leaker Jon Prosser tweets. The expected Pixel Watch 2, as well as a version designed for kids. It’s currently expected that this kids version will be Fitbit branded though.
Google Pixel Watch 2 price speculation
Now moving on to the price of the Google Pixel Watch 2. This is where a little more speculation is required. Considering we only have 1 previous generation to compare with, it’s hard to know exactly how Google will price this new release. With that being said, let’s investigate any clues.
The first Pixel Watch came in a couple of different models. which affected the price. Here’s how it looked.
- Google Pixel Watch (Wi-Fi only): $349.99 / £339
- Google Pixel Watch (Wi-Fi + 4K LTE): $399.99 / £379
We expect to see a similar level of pricing for the Watch 2, as it yet again likely sit within the mid-range of the other popular wearable tech of the year.
Google Pixel Watch 2 Google I/O news
Google I/O happened on May 10th, 2023. Unfortunately for the Pixel Watch 2, there wasn’t a whole lot to get excited about regarding it’s release date, hardware specs, or price. Despite that, the key takeaway from what we say at Google I/O is all about the software. Wear OS was on the receiving end of a ton of breakthrough features and additional app support. More on that just below.
We’ll likely see much more about the Pixel Watch 2 further down the line, especially during Google’s next presentation – which usually takes place in the Fall.
New Wear OS apps
So what about the upgrades to Wear OS? In other words, Wear OS 4 is on the way and here’s what it can do. We can first mention the introduction of WhatsApp, and easier access to Gmail and Calendar on your wrist. There will also be support for the ‘Find My Device’ network which helps you track down your other devices once linked together. Massively useful if you’re often misplacing small devices such as your Pixel Buds. You can also expect text-to-speech functionality and more accessibility features.
Perhaps one of the more exciting developments to come from Wear OS 4 is the battery consumption. We all hate devices which are constantly in need of charging. The new update promises extended battery life and the ability to back up & restore your watch – without having to perform a factory reset. Watch Face Format also means devs can create new watchfaces for power efficiency.
Google are also addressing privacy concerns. Working alongside Apple, your Google Pixel Watch 2 will be able to detected unknown trackers (such as an Apple AirTag) on your person. This was left without further details for now, but more are promised to come.
Google Pixel Watch 2 features to hope for
There isn’t a whole lot of action when it comes to knowing the exact specs of the Watch 2, so we’ve put together some features we’d like to see with the 2nd iteration of the Google Pixel Watch.
Variety in case sizes
Some users have reported their dismay that the Google Pixel Watch lacked multiple sizes. This meant you were out of luck if you were looking for a particularly small or large design for a perfect fit. The original Watch was a little on the smaller side, so a larger version at the very least should garner some attention.
While we’re here, we can also request more colors for cases too! There were 3 different colors available last year, so let’s see if the Pixel Watch 2 can provide more variety.
Improved battery life
There have been plenty of reports and reviews which point towards the original Pixel Watch being a little lackluster in the battery department. When it comes to hardware improvements, this is one of the things we want to see from Google. Right now, the original watch advertises a full day of battery life, i.e, up to 24 hours, which falls behind some competitors.
Another thing to wish for here is better compatibility with charging. In other words, reverse wireless charging would be nice, especially if paired with the upcoming Pixel 8.
More health & fitness tracking features
Here we have to admit that there already is a decent amount of features related to health and fitness in the 1st generation Pixel Watch. Perhaps that is to be expected though, given that Google acquired wearable fitness tech brand Fitbit back in January 2021.
We expect the Google Pixel Watch 2 to have even better Fitbit integration, and to provide a richer feature list. It’s a more premium device than a Fitbit smartwatch, after all. Fitbit apps and Fitbit Premium could be taken advantage of.
