It’s time to start looking forward to the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 earbuds. We wanted to arrive nice and early to the party to talk about what we want to see from the 3rd generation of the Google Pixel Buds, while seeing if we can figure out a release date too.

Back before the Pixel Buds Pro released in July 2022, many people were anticipating the ‘Pixel Buds 3’ – which would have been the first release since the A-Series back in 2021. Well, what we got instead were of course the Pixel Buds Pro. These are some of the best earbuds on the market though.

Features we want to see for Google Pixel Buds Gen 3

The previous generations of the Google Pixel Buds have seemed to fair well when it comes to tech reviews, but what are they lacking? Well, there are a few things we can talk about early on while we lay out what we want to see from the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3.

Pixel Buds Pro and the A-Series are the current line-up on the Google Store, and these are the two models which are still widely promoted. These arrived after the 1st and 2nd gen Pixel Buds, so naturally they can be seen as an evolution to the series before we hit the 3rd gen. Let’s see how they can be improved for the next generation buds.

Active noise cancelation

This is a feature which is included in many of the more premium models out there. For example, the Buds Pro does include ANC, and to a heavy level of control through the Pixel Buds app. On the flip side, the more budget A-Series is lacking here and doesn’t feature ANC. It does however include Adaptive Sound. This uses a similar principle, though it lacks a dedicated chip for the process. The overall effect is not as convincing as the full ANC experience.

Touch controls

Yet another feature lacking from the A-Series, but working well on the Google Pixel Pro. We hope to see a similar level of touch controls featured on the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3. As this kind of control become more commonplace, especially for higher-end models, it’s possible that some of these features will seep through to the base models.

Third party digital assistant

When using Google Pixel earbuds, then you are stuck with using the Google Assistant. While this is great, having more choice is always a great thing. As of now, there is no support for third-party digital assistants. The benefit of this of course is that it integrates well with the Pixel Buds app. But if you’re running on an iPhone instead, then you miss out on some features. We realize that the target market is more for Android users, but having the freedom to mix and match is valuable.

More color options

So far, the variety of colors on show aren’t exactly the best selection if you want something more vibrant. The Buds Pro do provide a decent amount of choice, but this is less than ideal if you want something more budget. The A-Series is likely receiving a new color, which is nice. We hope to see the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 release with more choice on launch though.

Google Pixel Buds release date history

One of the best things to look at when looking ahead to the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 release date is to find out where we are so far in the grand scheme of things. The first two generations and the following A-Series Pixel Buds actually had a staggered between NA and worldwide regions. The Buds Pro on the other hand had a global launch at the same time.

North American markets were always the first to enjoy the launch of the earlier models, with other regions following in the months after. For the sake of simplicity, the dates below reflect the US release date.

  • Pixel Buds (1st generation): November 2017
  • Pixel Buds (2nd generation): April 2020
  • Pixel Buds A-Series: June 2021
  • Pixel Buds Pro: July 2022

As you can see, ever since the 2nd generation, we’ve had a yearly refresh on Pixel Buds. But we still haven’t seen Gen 3 for the base model. Perhaps we’ll see a return to the mainline series on it’s way in the near future.

Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 release date speculation

There isn’t a whole lot out there if you want to know the release date for the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3. It looks as if Google is focusing on the A-Series and Pro models for now. For example, the recently released Google Pixel 7a launched with an offer to get the A-Series for free.

Moving forward though, we’ll be on the lookout for any further news about the 3rd generation of Pixel Buds. If the past few years are anything to go by, Google should be providing an update to their Pixel Buds range sometime in the summer, but so far it’s looking unlikely.

There were no big announcements at Google I/O on May 10th, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens at their next event, some time in Fall.

Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 FAQs

Have the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 been announced?

No, there haven’t currently been any official announcements regarding Google Pixel Buds Gen 3.

There are rumors of refreshes to the current line-up in the meantime though.

Will there be a Google Pixel Buds Gen 3?

We’re still waiting for any confirmation of the third generation of Pixel Buds. Last time we thought they were on their way, Google dropped the Buds Pro instead.

Now with the Buds Pro already here, we expect to see Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 coming in future, but it’s still up in the air at the minute.

Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 : Final word

That’s everything we know about the Google Pixel Buds Gen 3 release date and our personal requests to Google for the 3rd generation. We know that the Google Pixel Buds Pro and Buds A-Series are still a focus right now, but it’s always good to look ahead! Hopefully we should see further news of 3rd gen Pixel Buds in the near future.
