Nvidia aim to offer solid value for money with the RTX 4070 Super, especially if you can’t quite justify upgrading to the 4070 Ti. It is a 1440p-focused GPU and shows a number of promising signs, especially based on Nvidia’s benchmarks. We’ve curated some of our favorite reviews just below. The consensus seems pretty good overall, though there are some negatives which stay quite consistent across reviews. 4K and 1440p benchmarks are commonplace, as great 1080p performance is pretty much a guarantee with this mid-range refresh.

Tom’s Hardware

First off is Tom’s Hardware, an outlet which has a strong reputation for hardware reviews. Right off the bat, the 3.5/5 star rating isn’t too encouraging. They comment that while there is great performance and strong efficiency levels, the price is less than impressive. They also point out that the 16-pin power connector is ‘mostly pointless’. DLSS 3 also isn’t something their too keen on due to the increased latency while it’s on.

TechRadar

In contrast to Tom’s Hardware, TechRadar are a little more generous with a 4.5/5 star rating. They note that the MSRP is just the same as the original 4070 on launch, so the improvements are more than welcome. They still admit that it’s expensive for a mid-range card and you’re probably better off with the RX 7800 XT for gaming at this price range – they showcase some telling benchmarks vs this AMD alternative to demonstrate their point.

PCMag

Another 4.5/5 star rating, this time from PCMag. They’ve done plenty of testing with this new GPU to show that it a solid step up, returning 15% higher framerates than the RTX 4070 (according to their tests) for the same launch price – a real winner in PCMag’s book. Like others though, they point out that there’s plenty of close competition in the mid-range. Still, it gets the ‘best $599 GPU’ title from them.

TechSpot

TechSpot have gone hard on the benchmarks as usual, with no concrete rating. They test performance across a wide range of games, resolutions, and settings – ray tracing performance and cooling included. As per their verdict, they found a 20% improvement in gaming performance compared to the 4070, all for the same MSRP. They do however go on to say that the original 4070 should have already had this 20% improvement. At the current price though, the RTX 4070 Super is their new go-to unless a deal strikes elsewhere.

Digital Trends

Finally, Digital Trends score the RTX 4070 Super well with a 4.5/5 star rating. As Nvidia claimed, the card is top-notch for 1440p. It’s a solid contender for 4K as well, but Digital Trends comment on the 12GB VRAM limiting ray-tracing ability at this high resolution. Overall though, they are clearly impressed with the performance increases over the 4070, efficiency levels, and ray tracing performance. Even the value for money is praised here compared to the original.

Should I buy the RTX 4070 Super?

Firstly, this depends on what you’re upgrading from. While the RTX 4070 Super is a high quality GPU, it’s probably not worth the jump up if you’re already on a 40-series card like the basic 4070 for example. However, many of the reviews we’ve seen so far are promising for the 4070 Super, so we may see this card become a popular option in the coming months.

The real dealbreaker for many here is the price tag, which is understandably knocking a point off the final score. TechRadar in particular favor AMD’s 7800 XT if you’re looking for something for gaming.
