If you’re awaiting the latest version of tvOS, you’ll want to check out our current tvOS 16.6 release date news! Now that tvOS 16.6 has worked its way through the beta phase, the full release of the version is here to stay – but when exactly was it released? Well, we talk you through everything you need to know.

tvOS is Apple’s operating system for their range of Apple TV products, and follows similar release patterns and release windows as their range of other software. We’re talking about the likes of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS which see active development.

Apple tvOS 16.6 release date

*UPDATE* So now it’s time to talk about the tvOS 16.6 release date, which arrived on July 24th! This has been released publicly, so anyone with a compatible Apple TV device can install the update through the Software Update option via the settings.

Just to look back, Apple released their tvOS 16.6 Release Candidate to developers on July 18th, which meant the beta versions were wrapped up. tvOS 16.6 RC showed that everything was being finalized and ready to roll out for the public.

tvOS 16 release date history

A good indication of release date is the prior history. Apple, like many large tech companies, tend to follow a schedule when releasing both hardware and software updates.

  • tvOS 16 release date: September 12th, 2022
  • tvOS 16.1 release date: October 24th, 2022
  • tvOS 16.2 release date: December 13th, 2022
  • tvOS 16.3 release date: January 24th, 2023
  • tvOS 16.4 release date: March 27th, 2023
  • tvOS 16.5 release date: May 9th, 2023
  • tvOS 16.6 release date: July 24th, 2023

As you can see, the major releases have all arrived in alternating months. Development progressed quickly for the first few releases at the back end of 2022, but 2023 formed a different pattern.

Apple tvOS 16.6 features

In terms of features arriving with tvOS 16.6, there isn’t a massive amount to get excited about. The beta versions we saw focused on minor bug fixes, most of which will go unnoticed for many users, though they may notice improved performance in general. This is much the same for tvOS 16.6, with Apple talking through their security updates for the platform – though this is much the same as iOS 16.6, watchOS 9.6 and macOS 13.5 updated on the same day. Considering that tvOS 17 is on the way with a ton of new features, it was always unlikely that tvOS 16.6 would receive anything major.

tvOS 16 initially arrived with upgrades such as better Bluetooth & USB game controller support, HDR10+, and further Apple Fitness+ integration. One thing we can mention though is that tvOS 16.5 did actually add quite a large feature – the multi-view live sports feature. On Apple TV 4K, you can stream up to four live sports games at once, all displayed at the same time.
