It’s very likely that we’ll soon get information confirming the new iMac release date – specifically for the 24 inch iMac 2023 and 27 inch iMac Pro 2023. Although Apple haven’t yet official made mention of these products, the 30th October Apple Event, entitled ‘Scary Fast’, is likely to show us the first glimpse at these new products, along with when we can expect to be able to buy them, both as a pre order and following their official release.
According to highly respected Apple tech commenter, Mark Gurman (who’s occasionally wrong but rarely), the appearance of at least one of these new devices is almost a certainty, though there are questions about exactly what chipset they will come equipped with. See below for some predictions on the likely specifications of these upcoming devices, and our estimates for the likely iMac 2023 price.
New iMac release date estimate / 27 inch iMac Pro 2023 release date estimate
We don’t know definitively when the new iMac will be released, but we can make a decent estimate based on a few known facts and rumors.
Although this doesn’t always apply to iMacs, in general for their products: Apple unveil a product earlier in the week at an event, they then give about a week and a half for people to pre order the product, and almost always release the product on a Friday.
As a result, if it’s very likely that the new iMacs will be unveiled on Monday 30th October (or Tuesday, depending on your timezone), then we expect pre orders to go live on this date or on the following day, and the new iMac release date (when pre orders will be sent out for delivery) could land on Friday the 10th of November. The counter to this is that Apple often to releases new iMac devices several weeks (up to around a month) after they’re unveiled, which could put our new iMac release date at sometime in late November 2023. Either way – a November release seems very likely, although we won’t know for sure until the event itself.
24 inch iMac 2023 specs (rumored)
Mr. Gurman and others are of the opinion that the focus of the latest iMac release will be the chipset. The previous iMac (2021) to be released came equipped with an M1 chip so a new 24 inch iMac could come with an M2 / M2 Max / M2 Ultra or possibly the new M3 chip (see our Apple M3 release date page for more info on this) as mentioned, though it’s uncertain whether this might be kept solely for a new iMac Pro (more on this below). The thought is that the display and other features won’t change much from the previous iMac 2021, which would mean the spec list below, however we might see a slight difference in ports, and who know – possibly a mini-LED display variant (even if it’s thought to be unlikely).
- CPU: Apple M2 / M2 Max / M2 Ultra / M3
- Screen: 24-inch 4480 x 2520 (4.5K, 218 ppi)
- Display: LCD Retina
- Memory: 8GB/16GB LPDDR5 RAM
- Storage: 256GB / 512GB / 1TB SSD
- Ports: 2x USB-A, 2x USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm headphone jack
- Misc: wireless keyboard & mouse, 1080p webcam, stereo 5W speakers with Dolby Atmos
27 inch iMac Pro specs (rumored)
Given it’s expected that we will soon be seeing the release of the latest Apple M3 chipset, it seems that a new iMac Pro 2023 could be a likely candidate for high-end creatives, whilst the standard 24 inch iMac above could function more as a machine capable of medium-intensity creative workloads.
- CPU: Apple M3 chip (possibly other variants)
- Screen: 27-inch 4480 x 2520 (4.5K, 218 ppi)
- Display: LCD Retina
- Memory: 16GB/32/64GB LPDDR5 RAM
- Storage: 512GB – 4TB SSD
- Ports: 2x USB-A 3, 3x USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm headphone jack, SDXC card slot
- Misc: wireless keyboard & mouse, 1080p webcam, stereo 5W speakers with Dolby Atmos
New iMac 2023 price
We’d expect the pricing for a new 24-inch iMac with M2 chip to remain in line with what Apple charges for the current variant. So that’s a starting price of $1,299 / £1,249 / AU$1,899.
If Apple was to add in Pro chip options, the prices could shoot up by quite a degree. But we suspect prices won’t soar too much so that the iMac remains appealing to a general audience. If there’s an M3 variant this would also have different pricing, as would a new 27-inch iMac Pro, but there’s less material to speculate over how these could be priced.
