iPhone 15 120Hz refresh rate support: will the iPhone 15 have a 120Hz refresh rate?

The refresh rates on smartphones used to be a feature that no one considered, but recently, it has become one of the most sought-after features that really impacts the user experience.

Most budget smartphones come with only a 60Hz refresh rate; however, it goes up to 240 Hz on gaming smartphones to maxmise fluid gameplay.

iPhones are one of the best smartphones in the market. Unfortunately, Apple is yet to bring a higher refresh rate display to the standard models. Last year, the iPhone 14 Pro models received displays with adaptive refresh rates going up to 120Hz. According to a tweet by Apple analyst Ross Young, Apple may follow the same with the iPhone 15 series.

We don’t have any further information to go on at this stage, other than rumors, although the fact that the recent Samsung Galaxy S23 series were all 120Hz would suggest that Apple will probably want to follow suit.

What is screen refresh rate?

The screen refresh rate measures how often a screen’s static image changes each second, measured in Hertz (Hz). So, a display with a refresh rate of 60 Hz means 60 frames per second. The same goes for the 120 Hz and 240 Hz screens, respectively. Hence, a faster refresh rate means a smoother experience.

Adaptive Refresh Rate

You should know that smartphones don’t always run at their highest refresh rate. Most smartphones can adjust the refresh rate depending on the current activity.

So, why don’t smartphones always run on the highest refresh rate if they can? Well, high refresh draws more and more power from smartphones. A smartphone always running at 120Hz would drain a smartphone battery far too quickly. It is the reason companies have added the adaptive refresh rate function.

Last year, Apple released the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which have the adaptive refresh rate. The screens of these smartphones run as slow as 1Hz and as fast as 120Hz. Everything depends on the situation. The screen refresh rate is at 1Hz to minimize battery use when the always-on display is active. However, it goes up to 120 Hz while navigating through the iPhone.
