What are the CPU requirements for Insurgency: Sandstorm?

The game’s developers recommend the Intel Core i7-8700 and AMD Ryzen 7 2700 processors, both of which were high-end processors a few years ago. 

The i7-8700 is a 6-core, 12-thread processor with a 4.6GHz max clock speed. The Ryzen 7 2700 is an 8-core, 16-thread processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.1GHz. Even though the Ryzen has more cores and threads, the Intel 8700 is the one that delivers better in-game performance due to its markedly higher clock speed. 

We don’t recommend either of these processors if you’re looking for something new. While they can certainly offer you a playable experience in Insurgency: Sandstorm, going with a newer CPU from a lower tier provides you with better value and more future-proofing.

There’s much to like about the 7600. It has a high, 5.1GHz clock speed which allows it to deliver impeccable single-thread performance. In fact, its single-thread performance is in the same ballpark as that of much more expensive processors from the Ryzen 7 and 9 lineups.

Higher single-thread performance generally equals more in-game FPS when CPU bound, which is what makes the 7600 so good. You get to enjoy high-end gaming at an entry-level price point. 

Insurgency: Sandstorm is moderately demanding CPU-wise, but the 7600 packs enough performance to handle this game’s demands with ease.

It goes without saying that you’ll be able to maintain 60FPS at all times. But gameplay at 144 FPS and higher is also very possible as long as you have a decent GPU. 

Multi-core performance

The 7600’s multicore performance suffers from its limited core/thread count, so if you’re looking for a workstation or professional productivity processor with the ability to game, you may want to consider a CPU that has more cores and threads. You’ll likely find options in the Core i5 lineup more suitable. 

However, for gaming alone, the Ryzen 5 7600 is offering you unmatched value at this time. The SKU launched in January 2023 at a $229 MSRP, and its price hasn’t changed much since. Considering the performance offered, you get great bang for your buck. 

Do note that you’ll have to purchase an AM5 socket motherboard and DDR5 memory for this CPU, as it isn’t compatible with older AM4 motherboards and DDR4 memory. 

The Ryzen 5 7600 has a modest 65-watt TDP, and the box includes an AMD Wraith Stealth stock cooler. This included R5 7600 cooler isn’t as good as aftermarket options, but considering that the 7600 barely generates any heat at all, it will get the job done just fine.
