An appropriately powerful CPU lets you enjoy a comfortable gaming experience at high framerates and without lag or stuttering.

Best CPU for Sons of the Forest

What are the CPU requirements for Sons of the Forest?

Sons of the Forest features modern graphics and impressive visual fidelity. The game does require you to have a fairly capable computer to run it well. The developers, Endnight Games, recommend you equip yourself with a Ryzen 5 3600X, an Intel Core i7-8700K, or better.

Both of these processors are a few years old now but remain popular, especially the 3600X.  Both chips feature a 6-core, 12-thread setup, which is an optimal configuration for a gaming processor. The 3600X has a boost clock of 4.4GHz, whereas the 8700K has one of 4.7GHz.

As you may be able to tell, the recommended specs are actually fairly high in this case. We suggest not going for either of the dev-recommended processors if you’re looking for something new, as there are better options available now in the latest Intel Core 13th gen and AMD Ryzen 7000 series lineups.

Best CPU for Sons of the Forest

We recommend the Ryzen 5 7600X for Sons of the Forest. This CPU is a direct upgrade to the dev-recommended 3600X by two generations. Because it’s a newer Zen 4 CPU, it has a more efficient manufacturing process and an improved IPC (Instructions per clock) over previous generations.

The 7600X is a powerful 6-core/12-thread processor released in Q4 2022. 6 cores and 12 threads is perfect for gaming, even though it may seem low if you’re comparing it to modern processors from Intel.

Gaming

Gaming relies more heavily on single-thread performance. Extra threads don’t yield any performance increase once you have a certain amount. Most games don’t use more than a few threads efficiently, so 12-threaded processors are still able to deliver incredible gaming performance today.

The Ryzen 5 7600X features an impressive maximum clock speed of 5.3GHz, which is higher than that of any of the other processors currently available at a similar price point.

With a best-in-class clock speed, the 7600X delivers top-tier single-thread performance comparable to the much more expensive Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 processors. In other words, you get a high-end gaming experience at a very budget-friendly price point.

A good GPU for Sons of the Forest

Pair it up with a powerful GPU such as the RTX 4070, and you’ll be able to play games like Sons of the Forest in 1440p and 4K resolutions at the highest settings.

Lastly, just know that the 7600X doesn’t come with a stock cooler, so you’ll need to pair it up with a decent aftermarket cooling solution. A budget air cooler will be fine if you don’t mind slightly higher temps since the 7600X does have a moderate TDP of 105 watts. The best CPU cooler for the Ryzen 5 7600X will be an entry-level AIO, however.

Best Budget CPU for Sons of the Forest

We recommend the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for the best budget CPU, especially if you’re still rocking the AM4 platform.

The 5800X3D CPU boasts impressive clock speeds and an ample amount of cache, as well as advanced technology that surpasses its predecessors. However, in synthetic benchmarks, it falls short due to its lower base and boosts speeds and the lack of overclocking support. This has resulted in similar or lower scores than the 5800X in certain benchmarks. Nonetheless, the 5800X3D compensates for its speed limitations with its superior cache and instruction processing abilities.

The 3D V-cache, a unique feature of the 5800X3D, cannot be thoroughly tested in synthetic environments. As a result, its performance in synthetic benchmarks is deemed mediocre at best, whereas it shines in real-world scenarios.

When it comes to gaming workloads, the 5800X3D outperforms both the 5800X and the 12900K. It demonstrates exceptional performance in real-world scenarios without the constraints of synthetic benchmarks.

According to our data, the 5800X3D performs approximately 5% better than the 5800X in synthetic benchmarks and around 3% better than the 12900K in real-world benchmarks, which is truly impressive. Although the 5800X3D generates more heat energy, the performance gains over the 12900K are undoubtedly justifiable.
