Gaming enthusiasts have been left rather deflated with the back-to-back RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and non-Ti launches, with the value of these new cards not really hitting the spot. Now Nvidia’s affordable SKU is set for a third entry – the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB but how does it compare against its smaller 8GB VRAM sibling? The differences appear to be negligible aside from the obvious memory size and price but we will go into a bit more depth and see how they stack up.

The RTX 4060 Ti 16GB was released in July, to quite a paper launch with no reviews or stock but plenty of announcements. Interest in the 40-series XX60 SKUs has been incredibly low so far, with many favoring older hardware or even going up a step to the RTX 4070.

There’s not much difference between the two models of GPUs in terms of the core. They are both made on the Ada Lovelace architecture, created with TSMC’s 5nm process. The 8GB model of the card features the AD106-350 chip, whilst the 16GB model ups it to the AD106-351. This does mean the die is the same between the two. With the die size measuring 190mm² and they feature 22.9 billion transistors on them.

The table shows off the simple differences between the two models of graphics cards in terms of specifications. It clearly shows how the two vary and simply that they just vary in the amount of VRAM and not much else, aside from a tiny difference in TGP / TDP. If you’re not too sure what each of the specs means, we look at what each in more detail below.

CUDA cores

The processing power behind Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs is how the instructions of your graphics get turned into what you see on your display. The more the better for your frames, as supported by ray tracing and tensor cores as well. However, there is no difference between the count in Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and 16GB models, as such it’s not going to contribute to any performance changes.

Frequency

The core clock or frequency is how quickly the cores process those graphics. As such it can change the performance of the cards, but once again the two models have the same clock. The only difference you can expect is from custom cards that tend to overclock the card and offer a premium for it.

VRAM

This is the main difference you can find between the two RTX 40-series GPUs is the VRAM on the GPUs. There are still some factors that are the same in this category. They share the same 128-bit memory bus, that connects the memory to the die and can limit the speed of it. That is the same case for the memory clock which is set to 18Gbps, which gives the bandwidth of 288GB/s.

Now it’s the capacity between them that varies between the two. Upping from 8GB to 16GB should improve how much can be loaded onto them in terms of textures and improve the performance. Although with the same memory bandwidth between them, we’re not sure how much just the capacity will improve without a faster throughput. Especially since it’s still behind the higher-bandwidth RTX 3060 Ti.

TGP

Total graphics power is the amount of energy the card will consume at a maximum. That allows us to look into what kind of electricity your PC will consume and how much you will spend running it. Between the two there is some variation now, with the extra VRAM clearly needing the extra power and the 4060 Ti 16GB having a 5W higher rating. Changing it from 160 to 165W is not too significant for the difference.

The RTX 4060 Ti 16GB obviously improves one aspect of the 8GB model, and that’s the VRAM. The question is whether this really has an impact on the performance between the two GPUs. With the 16GB reviews not yet released, there is no actual performance data to compare. Therefore we see what Nvidia has suggested the performance is like with relative frame rates between them and predecessors to the GPUs. We can see that in the announcement of the 4060 Ti. However, they are both the same. They aren’t true to actual figures and raw performance.

Since the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB has already been released, there are plenty of benchmarks out there. TechSpot’s review scores a 15 game average in modern titles at 111FPS at 1080p, 78FPS at 1440p, and 38FPS at 4K. We can expect the 16GB model to provide some improvements over the 8GB model. We’re not sure how much by but at least a few FPS here and there. The added VRAM would suggest that the 16GB card will be the better performer in higher resolutions such as 1440p, but don’t expect too much considering the bandwidth itself is unchanged. The card is definitely still designed with 1080p in mind first, but 1440p is easily achievable while 4K lags behind.

Will RTX 4060 Ti 16GB have Founder’s Edition or not?

Another difference between the models of the 4060 Ti is the fact one is going to be lacking in a Founder’s Edition pick. Similar to the 4060 when that was released. Nvidia only supports the 4060 Ti 8GB with its own version. As such, if you’re looking for that particular pick, you have to look to only one or alternative choice of GPU.

How much more expensive is the 4060 Ti 16GB than the 8GB?

The extra 8GB of VRAM is going to cost you quite a bit extra, as the 4060 Ti 16GB costs $100 more than the 8GB model. With an MSRP of $499 compared to the $399 launch price of the initial model. That means Nvidia values the 8GB of memory at $100 but the market value is only at around $27 so that’s quite the margin on top.

Is the 4060 Ti 16GB worth it over the 8GB?

With what we know so far, the 16GB 4060 Ti model may not be worth it either just like the 8GB is overall. We might have to wait for benchmarks to come out to see its value but without a change to bandwidth or the 128-bit memory interface, it might not provide a big improvement. The 8GB model is ever so slightly more efficient due to drawing a little less power if that’s your preference, but the 16GB version could be worth it if you want to better make use of 4K texture packs, for example.

Looking towards its predecessors or some AMD RX alternatives you might find a much better choice of GPU. Although these will lack any frame generation and the ability to use DLSS 3 that might offer up the performance improvements in select titles. Right now, the additional $100 doesn’t seem like the best value for additional VRAM and no other improvements.
