Chat GPT appears to having issues – with users not being able to get on to the program. They are being greeted with a message saying: ‘Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com’. We have also verified this on Down Detector, where over 1,000 reports have appeared in the last hour or so.

We’ve had a look at potential fixes for these problems, which have included users being ‘unable to load history’ errors and some ‘Bad Gateway’ messages. However, as this is server related, you – the user – may be limited in what you can do to address it. Regardless, let’s see what the issue is and if anything can be done about it.

We’ve still not received any updates regarding the “failed to get service status” error, and Open AI status is still not reporting any errors.

UPDATE 14/07/23: ChatGPT seems to be functioning correctly after a slew of reports over the past few days that ChatGPT has been experiencing site-breaking errors. We hope that this is the last time we see errors plague the chatbot.

Why is ChatGPT not working?

Right now, it appears there is no fix for this issue as it’ll be with OpenAi’s servers. In this case, you should wait until OpenAI fixes the issue. There is no set time yet as to when this will happen, and there is also no scheduled maintenance that we can find, meaning this was not a planned outage. The error comes at a very critical time for some.

This poor soul was halfway through his Mather Thesis when the original outage occurred. this was the first in a string of many ChatGPT outages.

We will be updating the page when Chat GPT comes back online, or when the situation develops.

In the meantime, one thing that could be worth trying is to shut down the page and reload it – but we have tried this and it does not seem to work. We have also verified that you are unable to access ChatGPT until the issue is fixed.

Until the issue is fixed by OpenAI you will not be able to access ChatGPT. You should be able to access ChatGPT once the issue is resolved and you have reloaded the page. It might also be worth visiting the help page and logging the issue with OpenAI – they will usually be addressing any issues very quickly, especially one as widespread as this.

Fun fact, did you know that the ChatGPT logo changes color based on its status? Right now, it’s currently orange, as it’s feeling a little under the weather.

Is there a way to fix the ChatGPT failed to get service status

Right now, no, you can’t fix the bigger issue if the issue is server-side, but there are some things that you can try just in case the problem is on your end.

Users experiencing this ChatGPT error should try the following:

  • Refresh the page: Try refreshing the page, sometimes that’s all a problem like this needs. A shakey connection could be all the issue is
  • Clear your Web browser cache and cookies: Sometimes temporary issues can lie within the page and can be cleared by purging all cache files and cookies from your browser. All web pages will be slow the next time you load them, but it may fix the issue.
  • Check the ChatGPT Status page: There should be information pertaining to widespread outages on that page, if not, you’ll have to wait for it to update.
  • Use a different browser: Try loading up ChatGPT on a different browser, just to see if for some reason CHatGPT dislikes your current browser.
  • Contact ChatGPT support: ChatGPT support may be able to help you resolve any more advanced issues that may be causing you to price this problem.
  • Try a different device: It’s a long shot, but it might be the device you are using that has some issue with the web page. It might need a Windows Update.

If none of these solutions fix the problem, then all that there is left to do is wait. It’s not ideal but if there’s nothing you can do that’s all that’s left really. You may have to hold tight until the boffins at ChatGPT can fix the issues.

What caused the ChatGPT to fail to get service status

When an error such as “failed to get X” appears, it’s almost always a server-side issue. That means the issue is on the end of ChatGPT, not you. There is a multitude of things that can go wrong when accessing an online service, but a status error usually comes when something requesting access does not get a response from the server full stop.

This means that the server is either down completely, off, or being attacked. All of this is possible since we have no idea regarding the nature of the outage. The most likely of which is just a standard outage, it happens to everyone sometimes, and ChatGPT isn’t exactly a simple beast to keep running properly.

Your ChatGPT client does not know the status of the server on which ChatGPT is held, and that could be for a number of reasons, and there’s also not much you can do to fix that. There’s some possibility that it’s a cyber attack, a DDOS would achieve the same as a server outage, but there is no reason to suspect that yet, as there has been no information given.
