The next generation of graphics cards have just been announced, Nvidia’s much-awaited Ampere RTX 30-series graphics cards have been revealed. Mr. Huang stood in his kitchen pulled the new 3080 from behind his intense collection of spatulas, the 3070 seemed to appear from nowhere and the much anticipated 3090 just finished cooking in his oven.

August Rumours
While the official details and specifications are still under embargo, a series of leaks and rumors have given us a decent idea of what we might expect when we get our hands on these cards.
The RTX 30 series release date is set to start in September, with three cards due to be launched, the NVIDIA RTX 3090, NVIDIA RTX 3080, and NVIDIA RTX 3070. These will all have slightly different launch schedules with the first two cards expected to land in mid-September and the final one in October and November.
There isn’t any news yet on RTX 30-series Super variants, but if Nvidia follows on with their past release trends these will likely be in the works. We’d expect them to launch midway through 2021 once the initial 30-series lineup has been established.
For now, it looks like the only Ti variant we’ll see is reserved for the RTX 3080 Ti. Standing for Titanium, the Ti graphics cards are generally more powerful versions of the same graphics card. Once AMD plays their hand and shows off Big Navi, we could see some of the other 30-series cards get their own Ti versions.
We know for certain that these cards will be based on the 7nm architecture and will, of course, be a lot faster than the RTX 2080, with some rumors pointing towards up to a 50% rise in performance.
Initial leaks and rumors pointed towards there being an RTX 3090, which would be the flagship model of this new lineup. However, it looks like this card could in fact be an RTX 3080 Ti, instead. We’re still not sure if we’ll see a next-generation Titan GPU in the works, but we’d be surprised if this took on the 3090 name.
The RTX 3080 Ti looks to be the fastest of the cards and will feature a GA102-300-A1 GPU containing 5248 CUDA cores. We don’t yet have firm clock speed details but the 20% increase in cores when compared to the RTX 2080 Ti is very promising. This card is also set to feature 12 GB of GDDR6 memory which could offer nearly 1 TB/s in bandwidth.
The RTX 3080 is set to use the GA102-200-KD-A1 GPU which will contain 4352 CUDA cores and 10 GB of GDDR6X memory. It has been reported that this memory will offer a bandwidth of 760 GB/s.

August Rumours
While we still don’t have a firm release date for this next generation of graphics cards, the exciting news is that we should see them around the end of September. As with all new releases, we’ll be seeing the Founders Edition of these cards land first, with the aftermarket options from companies such as MSI, Gigabyte, and Asus coming later.
Some sources point towards an official announcement on 9th September, with the official retail launch on 17th September. While we can’t confirm that just yet, it does seem to roughly fall in line with what other sources have reported.
A recent teaser from the official GeForce Twitter account shows a countdown to what we imagine is either a launch or an official announcement. With little to go on, we’re not sure whether this is a soft launch or just more information.

After this recent teaser, Nvidia quickly announced that there will be an event planned for September 1st. At this event, Nvidia CEO and founder, Jensen Huang will give a talk to “highlight the company’s latest innovations in gaming and graphics.”
It’s pretty likely that the highlight of this event will be a showcase of the upcoming RTX 30 series, given that rumors suggest there will be an official retail launch on September 17th. During this event, we should hopefully get some solid details on the nomenclature of these GPUs, a good idea of specifications and fingers crossed, a release schedule!
As the release date of these cards is still uncertain, we naturally don’t have any firm prices to go off either. That doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on what they could be though.
One way we could do that is by looking at what Nvidia has done in the past with their Turing graphics cards. With the Turing release, we did see a fairly high price jump from their Pascal line so we’d imagine the same thing will happen with Ampere cards.
That being said, there have been rumors that Nvidia will be making an effort to make Ampere cards more affordable. This rumor is based on yet another rumor that Nvidia will be using Samsung’s 7nm EUV manufacturing process.
Another thing to bear in mind is that Nvidia has previously dropped prices in order to compete with AMD. When Nvidia originally announced their Turing architecture, there was little competition coming from AMD. However, with AMD’s eventual release of the Radeon RX 5700 series and the RX 5600 XT, Nvidia soon dropped its prices.
It looks like Nvidia will have further challenges from AMD if the rumors about ‘Big Navi’ are true. According to rumors, ‘Big Navi’ will beat Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti by a 30% performance boost. How it will compare to the RTX 30 series is unclear but the threat of ‘Big Navi’ could lead to a price drop from Nvidia to remain competitive.
The RTX 2080 Ti is still priced at around $1,199 so we imagine that the RTX 30 series will certainly not come cheap but it will be interesting to see which way Nvidia swings.
Will Nvidia want to compete on price or will the performance be enough to remain competitive with AMD? We’ll have to wait and see. With the rumor that we will see an official launch next month, it looks like we won’t have long to wait for a better idea of pricing.
At the moment, there isn’t too much information on where you’ll be able to pick these cards up. With an official announcement expected next month, we’ll likely start to see pre-orders crop up around the same time.
