Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 – what’s the difference between the latest Galaxy smartphone and the previous generation?

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S23 at the Samsung Unpacked event on February 1st, where we got full confirmation of the specs of this device, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 release date is imminent.

Overall it appears that the standard Galaxy S23 variant (and S23+) will be very similar to the S22 (and S22+), with the bigger chances being reserved for the S23 Ultra model. Indeed, even down the aesthetics, the two devices look remarkably similar.

So, this being the case, how much better is the Galaxy S23 better than its predecessor, and is it worth purchasing the new model?

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 cameras

According to the leaked specs, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is getting a huge camera upgrade due to the new 200MP sensor. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S23 isn’t getting the same treatment.

It seems Samsung is keeping the same camera hardware on S23 as its predecessor. The Galaxy S23 will have the same 50 MP primary camera, 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and 10 MP telephoto. Only the selfie camera is getting upgraded to 12MP; last year, it was 10MP. Let’s see how this minor upgrade performs on the S23.

Of course, we could see post-process improvements thanks to the new Qualcomm chipset Samsung is using on the Galaxy S23. But we can’t say for sure the whether there will be a major difference in the image quality between the two devices.

Another major difference could be the addition of the new Ultra Stable Mode for video recording, rumored to be as good as iPhone 14’s Action Camera Mode. The Galaxy S23 Ultra confirmed getting this new feature, but we are not entirely sure if Samsung will add this to the standard S23 model.

Samsung Galaxy S23 processor vs Galaxy S22 processor & performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is Qualcomm’s latest offering with some pretty big promises. The latest chipset for the S23, which is a specifically upgraded variant just for these latest phones, is said to have 35% faster performance and 40% better power efficiency.

On paper, this is excellent. But we have to see how S23 performs with the new chipset and how it differs from last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset.

This year Samsung has finally decided against the Exynos variants, which is welcome as this chipset wasn’t popular among users.

Lastly, the Galaxy S23 will ship with Android 13-based One UI 5. Rumors are that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S23 series with an upgraded version of the One UI 5, but we can’t be sure about it yet.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 storage & memory

Last year’s Galaxy S22 came out with 8GB memory, and this year will be the same for the Galaxy S23. But there’s a difference. Last year’s device came with 8 GB LPDDR5 memory, and the upcoming S23 will come with 8 GB LPDDR5X memory. We are unsure how significant the change is regarding a performance boost; only time will tell.

As usual, Samsung is not offering expandable storage. The Galaxy S22 had two storage variants, 128 GB and 256 GB. Initial rumors indicated the Galaxy S23 would remove the 128 GB variant, but the specs leak speaks otherwise. The Samsung Galaxy S23 is also launching with two variants, 128 GB and 256 GB.

Samsung Galaxy S23 size vs Galaxy S22 size

The Galaxy S23 will have the same 6.1″ screen as the Galaxy S22.

The Galaxy S23 measures 5.74 x 2.77 x 0.29 inches and weighs about 167g.

This is similar, but not identical to the S22, which measures 5.70 x 2.78 x 0.29 inches and weighs 168g.

Samsung Galaxy S23 screen vs Galaxy S22 screen

The Samsung Galaxy S22 had a superior display compared to the competition (e.g. vs iPhone 14) in 2022, and it seems the Korean tech giant are choosing to not improve it further this generation, at least for the base model. The Galaxy S22 had a 6.1-inch 120Hz bright and sharp display. The resolution was 1080 x 2340 with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 422 PPI pixel density.

Samsung is more or less keeping the display the same for the Galaxy S23. You will get the same 6.1-inch 120 Hz display with a similar resolution and aspect ratio.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 battery & charging

There were a lot of concerns about the battery life of the Galaxy S22. The device had a 3,700 mAh battery, a step down from the S21’s 4,000 mAh battery.

Initially, the Galaxy S22 barely passed the daily usage limit, but the battery life significantly dropped after a few months of usage. Users demanded a bigger battery, and according to the leaks, Samsung listened to them.

Samsung has increased the battery size for the Galaxy S23 to 3,900 mAh, which is not a significant leap. But paired with the upgraded Snapdragon 8 gen 2’s efficiency, we can expect a pretty good battery boost. In addition to that, the Galaxy S23 will have 25W fast charging and 15W wireless charging, similar to the Galaxy S22.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs S22 other features

In terms of audio quality, the Samsung Galaxy S22 was great. The stereo speakers were designed in collaboration with AKG; they were loudspeakers and detailed overall but lacked bass. It will be interesting to see how Samsung improves the sound of the Galaxy S23. But these are small smartphones, and this year, Samsung is keeping everything the same, so don’t expect any major updates.

Android smartphones, including Samsung, have always struggled with haptic feedback. The problem was nailing the vibrations. But recently, Samsung has taken the right path, and the haptics on the Galaxy S22 was top-notch, and we expect the same on the Galaxy S23.

Samsung Galaxy S23 price vs Galaxy S22 price

The Samsung Galaxy S22 was announced at Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 9th, 2022, and was released on February 25th, 2022, with a price tag of $799 for the 128GB variant.

The Galaxy S23 has exactly the same pricing – $799 for the 128GB variant, with storage upgrades costing more. Though you can get money off if you pre-order.
