Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 which is better? What are the differences?
With the imminent Samsung Galaxy S23 release date, soon the Galaxy S23 and the Apple iPhone 14 will come face to face, and it is difficult to say which one will come out on top. Both are the mainstream model devices geared at the mass market carrying mostly the latest (though not quite the greatest – See the Ultra/Pro series for this) the respective companies have to offer.
We have already got a comprehensive look at the iPhone 14. It was released last year with light upgrades over the last year’s model. The iPhone 14 has some redeeming qualities but is not as impressive as the Pro models.
On the other side, we have the Samsung Galaxy S23. It is the successor of Samsung’s last year’s flagship, the Galaxy S22, considered one of the best Android smartphones. The Galaxy S23 is yet to be released but the specs were revealed at the Samsung Unpacked Event on 1st February.
Currently, it looks like the changes from the last generation Galaxy phone are minimal at best. It will be challenging for the S23 to defeat the iPhone 14 without a significant upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 cameras
The iPhone 14 only slightly changed its cameras from the iPhone 13 before it. It has a 12MP primary camera and a 12MP ultra-wide in the back of the device. There’s also a 12MP selfie camera covering the front of the device. So, the hardware is the same as the preceding model’s, however, Apple also introduced the new Photonic Engine processing for improved low-light images. They also introduced autofocus for the selfie camera and a bigger primary sensor with a bigger aperture.
In a similar fashion, the camera specs of the Galaxy S23 are pretty much the same in terms of hardware. There’s a 50 MP primary camera, a 10MP Telephoto camera, and a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera. There is also a 12MP selfie camera. Samsung has brought various software improvements though, including improved low light photography and video through ‘Nightography’ which is powered by Enhanced AI. Digital Image Stabilisation also means smoother video.
We know that the iPhone 14 outperforms the Galaxy S22 in terms of image quality in most cases, which implies that it will win out against the Galaxy S23 overall. Samsung’s only hardware advantage is the Galaxy S23’s triple camera array with the addition of a Telephoto camera, which Apple only saves for the Pro series devices.
Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 : processor & performance
Apple is still using the older A15 Bionic chipset for the iPhone 14; the latest A16 Bionic chipset is set aside for the Pro models. But even with the A15 chipset, iPhone 14 beats the Samsung Galaxy S22 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in benchmarks.
However, this year’s Samsung Galaxy S23 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest offering, an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, specifically for the S23 line. With this, Samsung could beat the iPhone 14 by a narrow margin.
We’ll have to wait and see for independent testing following the S23 release, but it’s likely to be a close race.
Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 storage & memory
In terms of storage, the iPhone 14 is available in three variants, 128GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB.
The standard Samsung Galaxy S23 will have two storage variants, 128 GB and 256 GB, though the S23+ and S23 Ultra will have more.
The iPhone 14 offers 6GB of memory, while the Galaxy S23 offers 8GB.
Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 size
Apple has kept the base model iPhone at 6.1 inches for the last two years. The iPhone 14 has a box-cut design, the iconic iPhone notch in the front for the Face ID. The device also has the usual button arrays, the proprietary lightning port at the bottom, and a glass panel on the back.
The dimensions of the iPhone 14 are 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 in, and it weighs only 172g/6.07 oz.
The Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch display plus a different camera array, reminiscent of last year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The dimensions of the Galaxy S23 are 5.74 x 2.77 x 0.29 in; it weighs about 167g, making it slightly lighter, slimmer, and smaller.
Samsung Galaxy S23 screen vs iPhone 14 screen
Coming to the display panel itself, Apple has equipped the iPhone 14 with a sub-FHD 60Hz OLED display. It is a disappointing spec, considering the price of the device.
The Galaxy S22 already had an FHD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate for its Super AMOLED panel, so the previous model actually beats the iPhone 14 – the screen of the latest S23 is specced the same.
Apple iPhone 14 vs Samsung Galaxy S23 battery & charging
There were a lot of concerns regarding the short battery life of the iPhone 13. So, Apple decided to increase the battery size of the iPhone 14. It wasn’t a significant upgrade, but it did best the battery life of the Galaxy S22 by an hour if the S22’s refresh rate was fixed to a matching 60Hz (the full 120Hz refresh rate on the Galaxy phone saps the battery at an even faster rate).
The Galaxy S22 had a 3,700mAh battery, and according to the leaks, Samsung has decided to increase the battery size slightly to 3,900 mAh. It may not be a huge improvement but accompanied by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is known to reduce CPU power consumption by 40%, the Galaxy S23 could beat the iPhone 14 by a respectable margin, but we won’t know until it comes out.
Samsung already has the upper hand when it comes to charging. Last year’s Galaxy S22 had 25W fast charging. If the Korean company sticks to that number for the Galaxy S23, it’s still faster than Apple iPhone 14’s 20W fast charging.
The iPhone 14 and the Galaxy S22 both have 15W wireless charging capability. According to leaks, the Galaxy S23 will have the same.
Samsung Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 14 price
The Apple iPhone 14 arrived in September of last year with a $799 price tag for the 128GB base-variant: the same price as the iPhone 16 when it launched.
The base variant of the Samsung Galaxy S22 had a price tag of $799, though it’s now dropped to $699. The upcoming Galaxy S23 price is the same as the MSRP of last year’s model: starting at $799 for the 128GB variant.
