On January 26th, 2022, news broke about a new class of star that has potentially been discovered by the ICRAR research team in Australia. However, Epic Games’ Donald Mustard was quick to point out that the artist’s impression of the star is remarkably similar to the Zero Point which has featured in Fortnite’s back story since 2018.

What is the neutron star?

According to ICRAR, the team discovered the unusual entity seemingly appearing and disappearing as it released a powerful burst of energy three times an hour. Quoted as being “unlike anything astronomers have seen before,” the discovery could either be a neutron star or the collapsed cores of stars – also known as a white dwarf, but with an “ultra-powerful magnetic field.” This has led the team to label it as a “magnetar” – a highly magnetic neutron star.

Something that turns on and off like this, a transient, is apparently a large star dying – pretty sad, really. But the fact that this was so powerful, and that it remained on for a full minute, repeating every 20, is still perplexing the scientists involved. And it’s apparently pretty close to us. If you’re interested in the wonders of the milky way, I highly recommend reading the full ICRAR news piece on the magnetar. After all, I’m no expert, and this is a gaming site.

So that gets us to why I’m even writing about it at all. Well, it’s not all that serious, but an artist’s impression of what the magnetar might look like accompanies the linked article – and might look somewhat familiar to game fans.

Is the magnetar a real-life Zero Point?

Donald Mustard is the man behind Fortnite’s extensive lore, and the person who came up with the story of the Zero Point – the nexus orb created by the big bang which created and controls all realities. Mustard himself came across the news of the magnetar, and was quick to draw comparison between the artist’s recreation, and the Zero Point.

Mustard’s Twitter followers were quick to point out other similarities between the Zero Point and the magnetar, as well, such as its age and it’s incredible energy omissions. Some, such as Dark Scamander, have even gone as far as to claim that this links into The Matrix, too, and that Mustard, realising we are part of The Matrix, broke free, creating Fortnite as an attempt to alert us all to our own reality. I mean, this is all getting way too meta for me.

What do you think about this fascinating discovery? Are we all actually part of the Loop after all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
