Is the Samsung S23 AMOLED? The release of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series has been and gone, so we now know the answer to this to be yes!

The previous Samsung Galaxy S22 series had AMOLED displays, but this year’s variants are even better and brighter. The AMOLED display used on the Samsung Galaxy flagship devices (called Super AMOLED) is the best in the market. They are bright, sharp, and color-accurate displays that give other displays a run for their money.

But why the craze for AMOLED displays? And why is it better than an OLED display?

What is an AMOLED screen?

There are different types of displays available in the market, such as LCD, LED, OLED, AMOLED, and Super AMOLED. Each of these displays has qualities that set them apart. AMOLED is currently the most popular choice. It is typically used in smartphones, cameras, and media players.

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode Display, and AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode Display. AMOLED is based on OLED technology but their functions and capabilities are different.

OLED technology consists of thin layers of organic components that emit light as current passes through, and each pixel transmits its own light. On the other hand, AMOLED displays come with an additional layer of thin-film transistors or TFTs.

AMOLED displays have a faster pixel switching response compared to regular OLED displays and consumes less power However, there is a downside. AMOLED displays are harder to see in direct sunlight due to their low brightness, and though they still have a better contrast ratio than LCDs, the lacks aren’t as as good as they are with standard OLED. Another issue is the shorter life cycle. The organic materials used in the AMOLED displays degrade easily, resulting in fading colors.

What is Samsung Super AMOLED?

In recent years, Samsung haven’t used traditional AMOLED displays for their flagship devices: they use a Super AMOLED display, which is their own creation for the high-end Samsung Galaxy devices with a digitizer. Usually on smartphones the layer that detects the user’s touch gets overlaid on the display, causing the screen brightness to dim, but with Samsung Super AMOLED they found a way to integrate it into the screen, making the display brighter (an issue for standard AMOLED displays as mentioned) and sharper.

Samsung claim that Super AMOLED has a ‘20% brighter screen, 20% lower power consumption and 80% less sunlight reflection’.
