Mark Zuckerberg, when speaking to his team at a company-wide meeting, took a stab at the Apple Reality Pro’s $3500 price tag and its external battery.
Imore sources the Meta CEO as saying “They went with a higher resolution display, and between that and all the technology they put in there to power it, it costs seven times more and now requires so much energy that now you need a battery and a wire attached to it to use it,” Zuckerberg adds “They made that design trade-off, and it might make sense for the cases that they’re going for.”
It’s a valid criticism that CEO Mark Zuckerberg makes, the very price tag excludes a lot of people from owning the Reality Pro. This much was expected as Apple announced during the WWDC that it will be marketing the Reality Pro to businesses in the US first.
He also highlighted the differences in how Meta and Apple see the future of AAR and VR. He said, “We innovate to make sure that our products are as accessible and affordable to everyone as possible, which is a core part of what we do. And we have sold tens of millions of Quests.”
The Meta Quest is a fantastic headset that broke boundaries in terms of being able to freely use VR on the go, without having to be tethered to anything. Another area the Vision Pro has failed.
Meta CEO thinks the Vison Pro feels secluded
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg feels that the marketing for Vision Pro feels very secluded.
Zuckerberg expresses, “The core of our vision for the metaverse and presence is centered around social interactions. It entails people engaging with one another in innovative ways and experiencing a sense of closeness in novel ways. Our device is designed to promote active participation and enable users to take action.”
He further remarks, “In contrast, the demonstrations they presented mainly featured individuals sitting alone on a couch. While that might be a potential vision for the future of computing, it’s not the one I personally aspire to.”
Meta has proven itself as a driving force in the VR space with its line of Quest and Rift headsets. However, we’re sure that Apple’s showcase has put some concern into Zuckerberg that the Vision Pro will drive some consumers away from Meta for their VR needs.
Whether or not you agree with Zuckerberg, he makes some valid points. The Apple Reality Pro is insanely costly, you have to be tethered to a battery that only lasts 2 hours. And it does seem incredibly isolated. Although VR is pretty isolating by nature.
