Remakes are becoming a popular trend for game developers, squeezing that extra bit of cash out of fans who want a bit of nostalgia brought into a true, 4k reality. While some haven’t lived up to the hype, others have certainly delivered, giving hope to fans of other not yet remastered franchises that they’ll get their one true desire – harsh, 32-bit polygons smoothed out and ray-traced.
One fanbase that’s certainly been chomping at the bit to get any sort of remaster, remake, or port of their beloved franchise is that of Metal Gear Solid. Konami has certainly not been forthcoming with its Metal Gear rights post-Kojima and it all but looked like we’d never see a Metal Gear Solid game again, there’s now a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
While there have been rumors of Konami loosening its chain on the Metal Gear franchise recently, handing it over to Chinese studio Virtuos, it had appeared to be potentially a little bit of hearsay. But now, there seems to be some real concrete evidence that Metal Gear Solid is getting a new lease of life…with a remake.
While most would probably be happy with a remaster of Metal Gear Solid from the PS1 era, it’s actually not the original that is getting a remake, instead, it’s looking like the more recent Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater that’s having a fresh lick of paint.
According to a Virtuos Lead Software Engineer’s LinkedIn profile, it states that they’ve been working on an unannounced AAA third-person action-adventure remake which appears to be getting a 4K makeover.
Now, when you take this at face value, you could think that this might be a plethora of different games, but when you take into consideration that not only have there been reports of Konami getting a little more playful with their licenses and rumors flying around that Metal Gear Solid might be getting a remaster, this just makes sense. Additionally, Virtous has already helped out on a number of AAA ports such as The Outer Wilds and Dark Souls Remastered, so really, the odds really are stacking up in Big Boss’ favor here.
If you wanted more evidence, Andy Robinson over at VGC reported that Konami has been gearing up for a bunch of releases based on their classic franchises which includes both Metal Gear and Castlevania.
