The Pokémon Company released a new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus on September 28, 2021, showcasing the games Wardens, avatar customization screen and, most importantly, new Pokémon Kleavor, the first Noble Pokémon. We know very little about the Bug/Rock type Pokémon so far, but here’s what we do know from the newly released trailer.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is just one of the upcoming Pokémon titles, and is coming to the Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022. Arceus takes place in a region familiar to Pokémon players – the Sinnoh region – but not as we know it. The Hisui region is the location for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and is the Sinnoh region long before the events of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. As such, we can expect to see new items, new Pokémon and even new forms – or should that be old forms – of Pokémon we already know and love.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer – Kleavor

Mentioned by a number of Wardens, Kleavor is a new Pokémon never seen before in previous Pokémon games. Warden Lian describes Kleavor as “rampaging and running amok,” and during battle scenes at the end of the trailer, Kleavor certainly looks like it packs a punch with moves like Stone Axe.

The Bug/Rock Pokémon is actually an evolved form of Scyther, meaning that we have now been introduced to an alternate evolution path for Scyther, who can evolve into Scizor or Kleavor. However, the only way of evolving Scyther into Kleavor is with special minerals found only in the Hisui region, much like previous region-exclusive evolutions.

Kleavor, the Axe Pokémon, is also known as the Lord of the Woods, and appears on screen glowing a mysterious golden yellow, running towards the player in a fast and frantic attack. This phenomenon seems to be contained to Noble Pokémon, and the player is sent on a quest to “encounter and quell the frenzied Pokémon nobles.”

Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer – What is a Noble Pokémon?

Pokemon Legends Arceus Kleavor Noble Pokemon

From what we know of Noble Pokémon so far, they are actually revered by the people of the Hisui region, who give them offerings of food and water. We can assume that, normally, the Noble Pokémon and the people of Hisui live in harmony. However, the trailer suggests that something has happened to change the behavior of these otherwise peaceful nobles, and we need to find out what it is.

This phenomenon so far sounds similar to the story behind Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, where Pokémon were being forced to Dynamax, causing fear and destruction in the Galar region. Much like Dynamaxing, this frenetic yellow glow is temporary, as we see Kleavor in its proper form at the end of the trailer.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer – Alpha Pokémon

We also witness another phenomenon in the trailer, and that is Alpha Pokémon. For a split second, we can see a fierce Electivire with glowing red eyes, an Alpha Pokémon. Alpha Pokémon are stronger and larger than their normal counterparts, and will actually come after players who get too close.

Rideable Pokémon

A new item for players to discover in the Hisui region is the Celestica Flute. This flute is a traditional instrument of Hisui and, when played, will summon rideable Pokémon to the player. Pokémon Legends: Arceus will feature Pokémon that players can ride at speed along the ground, through choppy waters and even across the sky. The trailer introduces us to Wyrdeer – Stantler’s Hisui evolution, Basculegion – Basculin’s Hisui evolution, and Braviary’s Hisuian form.

Wardens are a new type of NPC in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and are each responsible for a special Pokémon. As Hisuian natives, they also know all about Noble Pokémon and give them offerings – when they’re not rampaging.

The Wardens we have met so far are Mai, Iscan, Lian and Arezu.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus – Customization

As with many Pokémon games before it, Pokémon Legends: Arceus will allow the player a vast number of avatar customization options, but it looks like we’ll have even more options than ever before. Among the customization stores in Jubilife Village, there is even an option to take professional photos with your Pokémon and have the ultimate memorabilia from your journey through Hisui together.
