Ubisoft has announced a Splinter Cell remake under development in the Toronto Studio. The new Splinter Cell game is getting built from the ground up, using the new Snowdrop in-game engine, which is the one used to develop the upcoming Avatar game revealed back at E3.

Splinter Cell Remake

If you head over to the official Uboofot website, the company released a Q/A interview with several developers working on the game. Some of the key comments from the article include references about it being a SPlinter Cell remake and not a remaster.

Matt West, one of the developers ha this to say: “ The original Splinter Cell has a lot that was amazing and revolutionary at the time it came out, 19 years ago. The gaming public now has an even more refined palate. So, I think it kind of has to be a remake as opposed to a remaster.”

It is a very interesting comment, which implies we are going to get core features of the old Splinter Cell games while getting new and modern spins on them. The idea appears to be it still has to feel like the old school Splinter Cell games while trying to offer players something new, rather than just a different visual look.

This is reflected in the game’s design. Chris Auty, one of the other developers on the project, had this to say: “We recognize a huge part of the appeal of Splinter Cell is the flawless planning, execution and satisfaction you feel when you go in and absolutely ace every encounter. Seeing your mastery put on display at the end of things, especially when you go through with no alarms triggered – that’s a big part of the Splinter Cell experience, and we want to be sure we’re honoring that.”

There have been inklings of a new Splinter Cell game for a while. Ubisoft filled for a new Splinter Cell trademark on December 6, which confirmed that something was going on in the Ubisoft development studios.

While this interview doesn’t necessarily say what the game will be or do, we have an idea of what we can expect as the game enters development. If you’re interested in getting more of an insight into the new Splinter Cell remake, Ubisoft also released a reveal trailer. It, too, goes into detail on the old Splinter Cell games, which you can check out here.
