A new, more modern version of The Witcher is in production, with development being handled by Fool’s Theory. This studio is made up of developers with years of AAA experience, including several veterans of The Witcher series itself, meaning we’re liable to get a pretty faithful remake.

The news was initially reported on the official The Witcher website. In a blog post, CD Projekt Red revealed this remake as the rumored ‘Canis Majoris’ project that was discovered at the beginning of October 2022.

The update also revealed that the game is pretty far along in development. It will probably be a fair while before we actually hear any concrete details on The Witcher Remake, but at the very least, it’s nice to have it completely confirmed by the studio itself.

The news was bought to more widespread attention by Nibellion, who shared the information on his Twitter page shortly after it was first discovered.

Why Remake The Witcher?

If you’ve never played the original Witcher game, then you’re not alone. While The Witcher 3 was immeasurably popular, that wasn’t always the case with the series. The first title in the trilogy sold relatively poorly, at least compared with the sales of the final entry.

Part of the reason for that, aside from being the first entry in a series that hadn’t left Poland too much yet, is that the original game was incredibly clunky. It had an insane number of different mechanics and keyboard shortcuts that you needed to remember, and the weird combat system also put off a lot of players.

Even dedicated CRPG fans (Computer RPG) sometimes struggled to get through it all. Even worse for some was the reduction of your various female love interests into an erotic card-collection minigame. Not a great way to endear yourself to a large chunk of the audience these days.

With any luck, this new remake will stay true to the original story and tone of the first game, but will make the combat and other mechanics a bit more bearable. After all, this is an action RPG, not a rhythm game.
