AMD has finally announced the 7000 X3D series CPUs, it feels like we have waited a long time for the next iteration of AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. This time, the V-Cache belongs to a Zen 4 CPU, three of them to be exact. Today we’re looking at the 7900X3D and how it stacks up against the previous-gen’s 5800X3D. This is Ryzen 9 7900X3D vs Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

We will look at both of these CPUs comparatively by analyzing the specifications, use cases, and price of each CPU. Since they’re both primarily made for gaming, we will be discussing gaming workloads especially.

For now, let’s take a look at the specifications of each CPU.

Update: AMD has announced the official release date of the Ryzen 9 7900X3D. It will be on February 28th, 2023. This will be alongside the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, however, the 7800X3D will not be available until April 6th.

Here we will look at the specification of the two CPUs we’re analyzing today.

The 7900X3D looks pretty normal until you notice the massive cache. This is the middle of the three new X3D CPUs in the Ryzen 7000 series, so we expect it to perform much better than the 5800X3D, but worse than the 7950X3D.

Once crowned the “fastest gaming CPU” we have seen the 5800X3D overcome the toughest opponents in gaming. This includes the 5950X and the Core i9-12900K, formidable opponents. Yet the 5800X3D managed, thanks to its massive Cache.

With all that out of the way, we will compare a few specifications. for the sake of time and an easy read, we’re only going to mention the things that have changed.

With that out of the way, let’s get into the specification comparison.

Here we’re going to discuss all the differences between the 7900X3D and the 5800X3D. To save you some time, we’re only going to discuss the differences.

Architecture

When comparing Zen 3 and Zen 4, many differences deserve their own discussion; however, here is a brief summary.

The main difference between Zen 3 and Zen 4 is that Zen 4 makes use of a new 5nm process technology, allowing smaller transistors resulting in a greater density. Performance and energy efficiency both increased as a result. Additionally, compared to Zen 3, Zen 4 offers even more IPC (instructions per cycle) improvements. This indicates that the Zen 4 core is more potent in addition to being more effective.

Core count

The Ryzen 9 7900X3D has a much higher core count, making it better for multitasking.

TDP stands for thermal design power, and in this case, the 7900X3D has a much higher TDP than the 5800X3D.

The TDP rating of a CPU is typically given in watts and reflects the amount of power that the processor is expected to consume, which in turn determines the amount of heat that is generated.

We are aware that the 5800X3D has impressive gaming performance, but will the 7900X3D outperform it? The chances look promising, as the Zen 4 core is significantly more powerful than the Zen 3 core. The Zen 4 core boasts enormous IPC improvements that are highly beneficial for single-core workloads like gaming.

Unlike the 5800X3D, which was restricted, the 7900X3D is not so limited since the 7000X3D series is unlocked for automatic overclocking. This means we should expect significant performance gains with the 7900X3D in gaming workloads compared to the 5800X3D.

Cache plays a crucial role in gaming performance, and with the 7900X3D having a much-improved cache with a larger capacity, we should anticipate a boost in gaming performance.

We fully expect the Ryzen 9 7900X3D to cost a lot more than the 5800X3D.

Although we do not know the official price yet, we expect the 7900X3D to cost from $500 – $600 Meanwhile you can pick up the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for anywhere between $300 and $370.

You also have to consider the upgrade cost to AM5, to support the 7900X3D you’ll need an all-new motherboard and a fancy set of DDR5 memory, none of which are cheap right now.


Ryzen 9 7900X3D vs Ryzen 7 5800X3D: Conclusions

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is clearly the better CPU when it comes to day-to-day and gaming workloads. Both of these CPUs are formidable but on different platforms.

The 5800X3D is the best of the AM4 platform and saves you the massive cost to upgrade to AM5. This is the saving grace of the 5800X3D. If you wanted to shoot for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, you’d need a new motherboard, new RAM, and a new CPU, obviously. So the 5800X3D is great for saving a buck or two whilst getting decent performance. But the 7900X3D is the CPU you want if you’re after power.
