AMD Kicked off CES 2023 with a keynote presentation, in which AMD announced some incredible upcoming products. The most notable of which was the new X3D variants of the Ryzen 7000 series, and due to that fact the announcement of the none X variants was overshadowed somewhat. That changes today, we’re going to shed some light on the new none X 7000 series variants, specifically the Ryzen 7 7700. Is the Ryzen 7 7700 worth it?

Now read: is the Ryzen 5 7600 worth it?

AMD’s 7000 series already consist of full-power X variants, but at CES 2023, that all changed. AMD has now introduced the Ryzen 7 7700, along with two other none X CPUs, the 7600 and the 7900. We’re here today, to see if choosing these none X CPUs is worth it for you.

Ryzen 7 7700 specs

The Ryzen 7 7700 hasn’t been officially released yet, however, AMD has released a full list of specifications for us to delve into. The specifications of the Ryzen 7 7700 are as follows:

  • Architecture: Zen 4
  • Core count: 8
  • Thread count: 16
  • Base speed: 4.5GHz
  • Boost speed: 5.4GHz
  • Cache: 32MB
  • TDP 65W

As you can see, compared to the 7600 the 7700 is incredibly powerful, with a higher base, and boost speed. Not to mention the 2 extra CPU cores, totaling 4 extra threads. The most notable specification is the incredibly low TDP of 65W.

Is the Ryzen 7 7700 worth it?

The Ryzen 7 7700 is obviously a lower-power variant of the Ryzen 7 7700X, that’s the whole point. The 7700 manages to conduct its business with just a 65W TDP, while the 7700X struts about with a massive 105W TDP by comparison.

There are only a couple of reasons to snag a 7700 right now and that’s either to negate the cost of upgrading slightly, or you’re worried about your energy bill. Or you’re trying to build a low-power system, advantageous when building in a smaller form factor as the cooling doesn’t need to be as harsh.

Energy prices are on the rise worldwide. A more efficient CPU will help keep running costs down and help to save you money. A CPU with a lesser TDP does not need as drastic of a cooling solution to keep cool. So you can probably get by with the stock cooler on this one.

The 7700 will be cheaper than the 7700X, meaning you can still get a pretty powerful CPU and use it as a stepping stone to upgrade to AM5 for less. As we all know, upgrading to AM5 is not cheap, especially right now.

The Ryzen 7 7700 definitely has its uses, but we’ll need to wait and see how this CPU performs against other 7000 series CPUs and competitors before we can make any concrete deductions.

Ryzen 7 7700 launch date and price

The release date for all of the none X Ryzen 7000 series CPUs is set as the 10th of January 2023. The Ryzen 7 7700 specifically, will be on sale for £329 retail. That’s $70 less than its bigger brother, the Ryzen 7 7700X.
