Is the Ryzen 9 7900 worth it? AMD announced many CPUs at CES 2023 during its keynote presentation. The most notable of which was the Ryzen 7000 X3D series, which has many gamers and PC enthusiasts excited. However, there was another set of announcements that were overshadowed by the X3D titans. AMD also announced three none X 7000 series CPUs.

The Ryzen 7000 series is already full of X variants but thanks to CES 2023, we know that’s about to change. AMD has now introduced three separate none X Ryzen 7000 series variants into the mix. The Ryzen 5 7600, 7700, and 7900. We’re here to find out if the Ryzen 9 7900 is worth it.

Ryzen 9 7900 specs

The Ryzen 9 7900 hasn’t been officially released yet, however, AMD has released a full specification list over on its website. This gives us plenty to delve into. The specifications of the Ryzen 9 7900 are as follows:

• Core count: 12
• Thread count: 24
• Base speed: 3.7GHz
• Boost speed: 5.4GHz
• Cache: 64MB
• TDP 65W

This is pretty huge from AMD, a 12-core CPU that boosts to 5,4GHz with a default TDP of 64W is pretty impressive. We’ll have to see how the 7900 stacks up against the other CPUs in the series.

Is Ryzen 9 7900 good?

The Ryzen 9 7900 is basically a lower-power version of the Ryzen 9 7900X, that’s the whole point. And it will be interesting to see how the 7900 stacks up against the 7900X when we manage to get our hands on one.

For now, however, we can merely speculate.

There’s basically one reason you’d want an efficient CPU, it’s cheaper. No matter what the reason, it’s usually to save money in one form or another.

The cost to upgrade to AM5 is massive right now, and we know that the 7900 will be a powerhouse in its own right. but it should cost less than a fully-fledged Ryzen 7 7900X. So the lesser cost could be used to lessen the blow of the total cost to upgrade to AM5.

More efficiency means a lesser TDP. This also means it’s cheaper to run and requires less intense cooling. Both are desirable factors if you’re building a small form factor build. The lesser TDP means you don’t have to fit a massive cooler in a very small space just to keep the CPU from cooking itself.

The CPU definitely has its uses. But we’ll have to wait to see how it performs until we make any concrete conclusions. But for now, it’s looking pretty good for the 7900.
