AMD’s next flagship, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, is set for release in February 2023. It’s based on the Ryzen 9 7950X but will feature AMD’s unique 3D V-cache technology. But is the Ryzen 9 7950X3D good for streaming?

The release of AMD’s new X3D flagship has been long awaited by gamers, streamers, and content creators alike. 

In this article, we will discuss how good the Ryzen 9 7950X3D is for streaming. 

Ryzen 9 7950X3D Specifications

AMD has already released the CPU’s official specs and provided us a few benchmarks to work with – and it looks like the new Ryzen is ready to take the Intel i9-13900KS head-on. 

First, the processor’s basic specs:

  • Core count: 16
  • Thread count: 32
  • Base clock: 4.2GHz
  • Boost clock: 5.7GHz
  • L2 cache: 16MB – 1MB per core
  • L3 cache: 128MB
  • TDP: 120 watts
  • iGPU: Radeon Graphics
  • Socket: AM5

We can see that the new 3D V-cache-enabled processor shares many similarities with the default 7950X. Of course, the most noteworthy difference is the record 128 MBs of shared L3 cache the 7950X3D comes equipped with. 

AMD has also managed to keep the CPU surprisingly power-efficient at a TDP of just 120 watts. You have to wonder where all this power saving is coming from.

Still, this is a very welcome change – one that addresses many of the power consumption complaints that were received by the default 7000 series CPUs. 

Will the Ryzen 9 7950X3D be good for streaming?

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D will be an absolute powerhouse, with 32 high-performance threads that should be able to run near 5GHz simultaneously. 

The high thread count means the new Ryzen will have an incredible capacity for multitasking. 

The new Ryzen will allow you to stream the most demanding games without experiencing a noticeable drop in your game’s FPS – the same cannot be said for many processors. 

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D has some pretty solid single-core performance too, at 5.7GHz at stock. That’s just shy of the current 6GHz stock boost clock offered by the Intel i9-13900KS. 

Single-thread performance is a major influencer of how much FPS you get while gaming, and 300MHz is a sizeable margin. 

But the Ryzen 9 7950X3D will likely make up for it with its 128MBs of shared L3 cache – which, as the 5800X3D has shown us very clearly – can have just as much of an impact on framerates. 

It’s best to have your games running at a high FPS to offer stream viewers a more comfortable viewing experience. 

With that in mind, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D will likely be one of the best CPUs for streamers. With its 32 threads, it’s also able to take care of content creation and productivity work – activities streamers commonly have to engage in. 

Of course, we don’t know the price yet, so we can’t really comment on its value. But it does seem to be a qualified contender for the top CPU spot based on its specs. 

I should mention here that the Ryzen 9 7950X3D uses double CCDs in its chip. The V-cache module is stacked on top of only one of them. This architecture is what allows the other CCD’s cores to reach the 5.7GHz boost. 

The standalone CCD could potentially experience some lag when it attempts to access the V cache. 

This is speculation based on the CPU’s architecture, though. AMD has been working with Microsoft to optimize Windows Scheduler to avoid this problem.

Final thoughts

It is currently unknown what the retail price of the 7950X3D CPU will be, which makes it difficult to determine its overall value. However, based on the specifications and information provided by AMD at CES 2023, it appears that the 7950X3D may be a strong choice for streamers seeking a high-performance system.
