The below is everything we know about a potential AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT laptop and/or RX 7900 XTX laptop release (or the RX 7900M or RX 7900S as it might be known). Be warned, at the moment it’s very little, it’s not even clear whether we’ll see either of these mobile graphics cards released to contend for the best gaming laptop top-slot.

Will there be a RX 7900 XT laptop or RX 7900 XTX laptop?

With the Radeon 6000 series there was no RX 6900M ever released to match up with the desktop RX 6900 XT – the flagship of the range. The highest-spec version that ever came out was the AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT, and it can be supposed that AMD deemed a higher SKU card than this would either be uneconomical (perhaps it was thought it would not compete favourably with Nvidia GPUs) or technologically difficult.

The question is then will we even see a RX 7900 XT laptop graphics card, never mind a RX 7900 XTX laptop version? At this stage there is absolutely no info out there, even leaks and rumors, but we think some sort of RX 7900 XT laptop GPU is likely, simply because Nvidia RTX 4080 laptop and RTX 4090 laptop GPUs will find it difficult to overcome the size and cooling restrictions imposed by the laptop chassis, meaning substantial performance reductions from these high-end GeForce cards, meaning an opportunity for the smaller AMD Radeon GPUs to claim some market share in the mobile space.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT vs RX 7900M vs RX 7900S

If there was to be a AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT laptop variant, it would likely stick to the naming conventions set out in previous generations of Radeon products – namely that the XT would be replaced with either an ‘M’ or an ‘S’.

The M stands for mobile, and is used to designated the more powerful of the Radeon mobile line of GPUs, whereas the S models are less powerful, for instance the RX 6800S has half the VRAM and memory bus width of the RX 6800M, plus lower clock speeds and only 80% the TGP (this does mean it has lower power consumption however).

It’s not outside the realms of possibility we could end up with an AMD Radeon RX 7900M and a RX 7900S. Of course we could end up with neither.

Radeon RX 7900 XT & RX 7900 XTX specifications (desktop)

The below is a comparative list of the specifications of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX desktop variants, to give some idea of what specs the laptop variants may come with. Obviously you can expect the mobile versions of the graphics cards to be less powerful, to account for the size and voltage restrictions imposed by a laptop chassis.

What would be a likely RX 7900 XT laptop release date?

As with everything else there’s been co confirmation as yet regarding a potential RX 7900 XT laptop release date and RX 7900 XTX laptop release date. We can use the release schedule of the preceding Radeon 6000 series GPUs to perhaps give us some indication however, that if these mobile GPUs are going to be released, when roughly this might be.

The first Radeon 6000 desktop GPUs: the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT were released on 18th November 2020, with the RX 6900 XT being released on 8th December 2020.

The first mobile GPUs in the series: the RX 6800M, RX 6700M, and RX 6600M, were released on 31st May 2021.

The rest (the RX 6850M XT, RX 6800S, RX 6700S, RX 6650M and RX 6650M XT, RX 6600S, RX 6500M, RX 6300M) were released on 4th January 2022.

It seems likely then that Q2 2023 could be when we see the first Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs released, and the RX 7900 XT laptop / RX 7900 XTX laptop / RX 7900M laptop GPU could be among them. As ever, only time will tell, but we’ll keep this page updated with all the latest rumors, leaks, and speculation as it comes out.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT laptop & RX 7900 XTX laptop FAQs

Can you get a RX 7900 XT laptop?

Currently no – there is no such thing as a RX 7900 XT laptop equivalent, and we’re not sure there will even be one.

What is the most powerful Radeon laptop graphics card

Currently the most powerful AMD Radeon graphics card you can get in a laptop is the AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT from 2022, though this is less commonly found than the AMD Radeon RX 6800M, which has the same number of compute units/cores and memory, but a slower clock frequency.
