Now that the RTX 4060 Ti is widely available, and the base RTX 4060 just coming out, it’s time to do some comparisons. In this case, that means the RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S. The Xbox Series duo feature the budget Series S, and more powerful and feature-packed Series X. This isn’t the first time we’ve pitted Nvidia’s RTX 4060 family up against a console either, as the PS5 also turned out to be an interesting match-up.

Just like the PS5, the Xbox Series X/S consoles are now several years old, and of course their original hardware isn’t going to change in that time. The RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 have come at a time before any big refresh of the consoles, so let’s see if it can outperform both Series X and Series S.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S specs

Obviously we’re comparing fairly different pieces of hardware here. As the RTX 4060/Ti are graphics cards, we’ll also be looking at the GPU within both the Xbox Series X and Series S first and foremost. As we mentioned, the Series X is the more powerful of the two consoles.

We can see that the Series X includes a powerful GPU, albeit a little bit outdated on RDNA 2, rather than AMD’s latest architecture – RDNA 3. Same with the Series S – which is also on the weaker Lockhart GPU. The RTX 4060 Ti on the other hand is from Nvidia’s 40-series, featuring the latest frame gen technology and DLSS 3 from the Ada Lovelace architecture.

One interesting thing to point out is the VRAM. The Series S sticks to 8GB, while the Series X has 10GB of effective RAM. The 4060 Ti actually has a 16GB model, which comes out after the 8GB variant. Having a higher amount of VRAM is useful for gaming at higher resolutions such as 4K. The base RTX 4060 is limited to 8GB VRAM and other slightly lower memory specs.

The 4060 Ti is clearly better than the Series S in every regard except power consumption, but that doesn’t mean Nvidia’s GPU is inefficient. In fact, quite the opposite – the RTX 4060 Ti has a low TDP considering the amount of power it provides. It has more CUDA Cores and sufficiently higher clock speed than even the Series X, with much less power consumption. The RTX 4060 goes one step further than that though when it comes to power consumption, with just 115W which rivals even the lightweight Series S console.

We’d have to say that the RTX 4060 Ti wins out here, but the Xbox Series X does still provide a mighty challenge and keeps it’s title as the most powerful console right now. Not to mention that the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti is a little lackluster when it comes to bandwidth.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S performance

Now for relative performance between our four contenders. The Xbox Series X is designed for 4K gaming at 60FPS. This is an impressive feat, and something that can in part be achieved thanks to fantastic console optimization and the specs on show. When you drop down to 1440p, you can see the Series X aim for 120FPS instead.

In contrast, the more budget Series S is aiming for that consistent 60FPS at 1440p, and isn’t really designed with 4K in mind at all. Drop down to 1080p and you can see framerates over 60. Both of the Xbox consoles are capped at 120Hz for their display outputs.

The RTX 4060 Ti is more flexible in this regard, as you aren’t bound by that 120Hz display output, especially at 1080p where you could enjoy 240Hz, as our gaming monitor guide shows. The HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs can even provide 8K resolutions at 60FPS, however you won’t be achieving this with the 4060 Ti in-game. The RTX 4060 is first and foremost designed for 1080p, where we would suggest targeting the 144Hz range. Like always though, it massively varies depending on game.

Nvidia market the 4060 Ti as the champion of 1080p, but the card is still capable at 1440p as well. At 4K, you definitely need to scale the settings way down to enjoy smooth gameplay in more modern titles, utilizing the fantastic DLSS 3.0 frame generation support that both the 40-series GPUs offer. Due to shoddy PC ports these days, the Series X may actually provide better performance at these higher resolutions in certain titles. Overall though, we’d say the RTX 4060 Ti is a going to be a better performer than both consoles, with the RTX 4060 just behind its older sibling with around a 5% drop in performance expected.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S price

Now for the price – and this is where it can be hard to compare between the dedicated GPU and consoles. What you’re paying for is vastly different. The RTX 4060 or Ti isn’t going to run games alone, you need the rest of your gaming PC too, alongside any peripherals. When it comes to consoles like the Xbox Series X/S, it’s an all-in-one package. So it does depend if you’re looking to invest in a full gaming PC, or just want to have a machine to play on with no extra costs involved.

Regardless of your intentions, here’s how the prices look (MSRP):

  • RTX 4060 price: $299
  • RTX 4060 Ti (8GB) price: $399
  • RTX 4060 Ti (16GB) price: $499
  • Xbox Series X price: $499
  • Xbox Series S price: $299

As you can see, the Xbox Series X rivals the price of the 16GB 4060 Ti, but you’re getting a complete solution – which we think is pretty good value for money based on the performance. Despite that, the Series S is an impressive budget option, a whole $200 less than it’s older sibling. It matches the price of the RTX 4060, which is fitting considering these are our two lightweight options here.

We think that the Series S actually provides the best value for a 1080p gaming – sometimes even 1440p machine in casual games. Especially with dedicated GPUs often labeled as overpriced in recent times.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S – which is best?

What’s the verdict then? Well, when it comes to power and on-board tech, we’d have to say the RTX 4060 Ti just about outdoes the Xbox Series X. The 16GB version of Nvidia’s 40-series GPU is definitely going to be a good choice if you want to play on higher resolutions too.

Reviews of the 8GB version have been criticizing the lack of memory and bandwidth early on, and this is where the Xbox Series X can actually be a step ahead of the 8GB version. Even more so thanks to better console optimization if you want to enjoy 4K gaming. For a budget gaming choice though, none of these really come close to the Xbox Series S, but the RTX 4060 can prove to be a good budget PC option depending on the price.

So overall, the ‘best’ option really depends on your requirements. If you want to bag yourself a RTX 4060 or 4060 Ti, then you’ll need the rest of the rig lined up. For the console though, Series S provides incredible value, with the Xbox Series X performs incredibly well.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4060 vs Xbox Series X/S FAQs

Is the Xbox Series X equivalent to the RTX 4060 Ti?

We’d say the 4060 Ti is a little more powerful than the Xbox Series X, as the Series X is closer in technology to the RX 6600 XT or RTX 2070 Super.

Comparing a console to a dedicated GPU isn’t a 1:1 comparison as such, but we can still get a decent idea of how they match up.

Is the Xbox Series S good value for money?

The Xbox Series S is fantastic value for money, especially for 1080p gaming.

The console can also stretch to 1440p in some cases, and we think it serves as an ideal option for budget gaming.
