In the wake of Patch 1.3’s release, the pace of Cyberpunk 2077’s ongoing renovations has hit something of a lull. Five months have passed since any changes of substance have been made to Night City and its inhabitants. As part of their efforts to “rebuild trust” in the company and its games, CD Projekt Red have attempted a greater degree of transparency when the post-launch work is taking longer than expected. This makes the gap between patches unlikely to be a result of unspoken delays, and with the bulk of Cyberpunk 2077’s promised extra content still to come, it could well be that development has been quietly ramping up on something significant.

Fans on reddit have noticed that the Cyberpunk 2077 build has been updated on the Steam database, which seems a clear sign that a new update will be arriving soon.

Cyberpunk 2077 Next Gen

Initial Patches for Cyberpunk 2077 focused on stability, getting the game into a more reliable state. Work was done to minimize crashes and fix the game’s most glaring issues, while adding small technical and graphical improvements. Now that Cyberpunk 2077 is in a more stable state, it may be time for CD Projekt to take the next big step, and release the Next Gen update.

The Next Gen update has been on everyone’s minds since launch, as a potential solution to the worst of the game’s problems. Though Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was shaky across all platforms, console players bemoaned the disparity in quality between the console and PC versions of the game. As positive initial buzz for the game was based exclusively around the PC version, console players felt that Next Gen hardware would bridge the performance gap and allow them to experience the best of what the game had to offer.

CD Projekt’s update roadmap has changed over the course of post-launch development, but the Next Gen update has remained the key goal that the company is striving towards.

Although the Next Gen update was originally intended to launch in 2021, players seem mostly comfortable with waiting until CD Projekt is confident enough to release the update on its own terms, as opposed to rushing and ending up with the same issues that plagued the game’s launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 turns a corner?

It could be that this build update will turn out to be for another smaller bug-fixing patch, to pave the way for the eventual big release of the Next Gen update, but there is reason to suspect that CD Projekt would be working towards making a splash with a big surprise release.

The Steam Autumn Sale has led to something of a reversal of fortune for Cyberpunk 2077, as the sale encouraged many players to try out the game for the first time, with the benefit of the post-launch patches. Positive ratings began to roll in, and CD Projekt will want to capitalise on this goodwill if they are to fully turn the game’s reputation around. Finally releasing the Next Gen versions of the game on console would allow them to seize this opportunity.

The final verdict on Cyberpunk 2077 is still up in the air, with opinion divided between those that think the game will take too much work to ever truly fix, and those that believe that it’s coming closer to greatness all the time. For the undecided, the Next Gen update would be a clear incentive to finally give the game a try and see if it can retain some of its early promise.
