Another day, more online misbehavior from people who should know better, especially when it affects their livelihood.
In case you are out of the loop, streamer JiDion (Demarcus Cousins) went more than a little rogue in a sexist, and basically grim online hate campaign against ridiculously popular fellow streamer Pokimane (Imane Anys). It’s not for us here to regurgitate the kind of nonsense spouted by JiDion originally, suffice to say it earned him an initial two-week ban from Twitch.
It all seems to stem from JiDion’s belief that Pokimane puts on a fake persona on streams to entice fans – okay mate because that’s not what you all do really is it? He even took the opportunity to post an image online of Pokimane without makeup on. No big deal in itself but, well, just stop it.
Anyway, things have got worse, so let’s have a look.
What did JiDion do to Pokimane to get banned?
On January 12th, JiDion took the opportunity to encourage his viewers to partake in a “hate raid” on Pokiman’s Twitch stream. This earned him a 14-day ban and came just a day after his account was verified in the first place.
Since this JiDion accepted he deserved to get banned but insisted his dislike for Pokimane was nothing to do with her gender, he just dislikes her and a person. Again, maybe wind it in a bit and play some games online instead.
How long is JiDion banned from Twitch?
JiDion has now confirmed that the original 14-day ban has been upgraded to a permanent ban. You can see why Twitch would want to get on top of any perceived sexual harassment of one of its most popular streamers. However, JiDion is not taking this lying down and has launched his own little hashtag – #twitchfreejidion
JiDion said: “I’m not here to talk about why I got banned because I deserved to get banned,” he said. “It is what it is. I broke the terms of service. But what I am here to talk about is that I’m here to ask Twitch to make it fair.”
“I feel Twitch should keep my 14-day suspension, especially for a first-time offense, and not let outside factors determine [it]. What I did was wrong. But how am I supposed to do better the next time if I never get a next time?”
Will twitch unban JiDion?
Unlikely we feel, and in a few days it will all have gone away, but removing the ban and walking it back would doubtless cause a backlash against the company with people saying it enables sexual and other harassment. The whole thing is ridiculous really, because absolutely none of needed to happen – but, well that’s social media for you.
Until the next time, probably tomorrow.
