The iOS 16.5 release date has been and gone, but users don’t have to install it yet if they don’t want to, but should you upgrade to iOS 16.5? Well, although there has been a compatibility issue with a certain adapter that may put people off who regularly use it, but generally we’d say it’s a very good idea – read below for all the details.

You can check which iOS version you have on your phone by looking in Settings > General > Software Update (not that iOS 16.5 is only compatible with iPhone 18 and later).

Apple encourages users to upgrade to iOS 16.5 for security update

Apple has identified three zero-day security weaknesses that could bring issues for those who do not update their iOS version to iOS 16.5 immediately. If these are not patched up with an immediate update, then users could be vulnerable to exploits/attacks. These are as follows:

  • (CVE-2023-32409) – could enable a remote attacker to break out of the Web Content security sandbox.
  • (CVE-2023-28204) – could disclose sensitive information when processing web content.
  • (CVE-2023-32373) – could lead to arbitrary code execution using maliciously crafted web content.

Based on this alone, it’s a good idea to make sure you have the latest version installed.

iOS 16.5 Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter issue

The biggest bug noted so far in the iOS 16.5 release has been a loss of iPhone/iPad compatibility with the Lightning port to USB 3 camera adapter – with the charging/power feature no longer working, much to the chagrin of those who regularly rely on it.

This essentially lets you attach a camera, mic, or other compatible USB accessory to an iPhone or iPad, whilst still allowing you to charge the iPhone or iPad via the Lightning socket.

We expect to see an iOS 16.5.1 update to correct this in the next couple of weeks.

iOS 16.5 features

The following four features came with iOS 16.5 that added additional functionality to existing apps, as well as the usual security updates and bug fixes:

  • Siri – screen recording added
  • Apple News – a new ‘sports tab’ was added
  • Office – new smoke alarm alert feature between HomePods (detecting) to your phone (alerting)
  • Wallet – the new Apple Card savings account
