CS:GO sees the highest player count ever

Steam: “We were unable to contact the game’s item server” CS:GO inventory error

This is the error that occurs when you try to purchase something from the Steam Community Market right now. These issues are following a pretty rough week for CS:GO users, as problems plagued the servers last week preventing anyone from playing at all.

Now it seems, the servers are fixed for matchmaking but CS:GO’s and by extension, Steam’s item servers are currently experiencing issues.

For now, it seems that there are many CS:GO players reporting the error, as an old Reddit post suggests. This post is more than 2 years old, but it has active comments right now of players reporting the error.

CS:GO Inventory unavailable error

it seems that these issues are rooted within Steam itself and the CS:GO inventory servers, as not only can we not access items on the Steam Community Market, we cannot acccess our inventories.

We were unable to contact the game's item server inventory error

This is a massive issue, possibly due to the new influx of players that the Counter-Strike 2 play test coverage is bringing in. Steam has noticed a 500,000-player increase since December 2022, according to the data provided by SteamDB. This total player count now sits at 1.51 Million players, an all-time high for CS:GO. Maybe the servers just can’t handle all these players.

What causes We were unable to contact the game’s item server error?

Usually, it’s the servers getting overloaded. This means that there are so many players trying to access the inventory servers that the servers simply cannot keep up. there’s too much data for the servers to process. This can’t really be fixed by you unless it’s an issue on your end with your internet connection.

The only thing that can be done is for Valve to update and upgrade server power and capacity.

How to fix We were unable to contact the game’s item server error

There is not a lot you can do other than just wait for Steam to fix the issues, but if you want to try fixing the error for yourself, there are a couple of things we recommend.
