Initially, only the top-end boards are being released with the new generation. These are the X670E boards which are the extreme versions of the lineup, which have their own benefits over their lower lineups.

When it comes to the motherboard it is certainly a core feature of your build. It connects all the different parts together to let them communicate and work together to create the final product. Although it might not be the most exciting part, it still varies in the features available and what price it will ask for.

X670E motherboard features – what’s new?

The biggest change in this generation of motherboards will be the new socket design. AMD has finally moved to LGA, meaning the contact pins are now embedded into the motherboard. Rather than on the CPU as we’ve seen before.

This allows for a much denser pin configuration, with 1718 as shown by the LGA 1718 naming. Although it has changed the socket, the size has remained the same. This has allowed for CPU compatibility to remain, and so it shows the consumer-friendly design to stop wastage between new products.

X670E is the Extended version of the chipset. It features the best and most plentiful array of parts on it. These extreme boards will have full PCIe gen 5 speeds for both graphics cards and storage. Focused on overclocking, they will have an SVI-3 power infrastructure for more power stages.

Furthermore, they can feature up to four HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0 ports, as now the new Ryzen CPUs will have RDNA 2 GPU on board. These boards can also feature WiFi 6E for faster speeds as well as DDR5 RAM for even faster computation.

ASUS is one of the top brands of motherboard manufacturers with great products across the board. It has a range of choices that vary in price and quality. We see the top end with the Strix branding whilst the Prime offers the most basic options.

There are plenty of choices for the ASUS X670E motherboards, so there are a few considerations between them.

• ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme – this is the top-spec option of the lineup. It has 4x DIMM slots for a maximum of 128GB of DDR5 memory. As well as capable of fitting 4x PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSDs and 1x PCIe 4.0 SSD. It comes with 2x USB 4, 2x USB 3.2 gen 2×2, 10x USB 3.2 gen 2, 4x USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 4x USB 2.0 ports. For connectivity, it has WiFi 6E, 1x Intel 2.5 Gb, and 1x Marvell 10 Gb Lan ports. And is sized at 30.5 cm x 27.7 cm.
• ROG Crosshair X670E Hero – a slightly lower speed motherboard over the extreme. This one differs with 3x PCIe 5 and 2x PCIe M.2 connectors. For USBs, it features 2x USB 4, and 9x USB 3.2 Gen 2, and 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. For connectivity, it has WiFi 6E and 1x Intel 2.5Gb port and measures 30.5 cm x 24.4cm.
• ROG Crosshair X670E Gene – a smaller MATX board, this features 2x DIMM slots for a maximum of 64GB of DDR5. It only has 2x PCIe 5.0 and 1 PCIe 4.0 M.2s. For backports it has 2x USB 4, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2.2, and 6x USB 2.0s. Whilst connectivity is provided by WiFi 6E and 1x Intel 2.5Gb LAN. It measures 24.4 cm x 24.4 cm.
• ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WiFi – the Strix variant offers full support again, with 4x DDR5 slots for 128GB. Storage is 3x PCIe 5.0 and 1x PCIe 4.0 M.2s. Its ports feature 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, 12x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 6x USB 2.0. Whilst connectivity is also WiFi 6E and Intel 2.5Gb LAN and it measures 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm.
• ROG Strix X670E-I Gaming WiFi – the ITX board is the smallest and will have a lot to hold up. It features 2x DIMM DDR5 up to 64GB and can have 1x PCIe 5.0 and 1x PCIe 4.0 M.2s. For its ports, it has 2x USB4, 7x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 7x USB 2.0​ (Including ROG Strix Hive & ROG FPS-II Card) since it doesn’t have a sound card on board it uses an external one. • ProArt X670E-Creator WiFi – More focused on work and productivity, it has all four DIMM slots of DDR5 up to 128GB. It then has 2x PCIe 5.0 and 2x PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. For USB ports it has 2x USB4, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, 7x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 7x USB 2.0. For the internet, it has WiFi 6E, 1x Intel 2.5 Gb, and 1x Marvell 10 Gb. It comes in at a size of 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm.
• TUF Gaming X670E-Plus WiFi – It also has the full DIMM available, and a range of storage slots. It has 1x PCIe 5.0, 2x PCIe 4.0, and 1x PCIe 3.0 slots. For ports it has 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, 5x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 7x USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 6x USB 2.0. Then it has WiFi 6E and 1x Realtek 2.5 Gb LAN and comes in at 30.5cm x 24.4cm.
• Prime X670E-Pro WiFi – Still with the full DDR5 slots, it also has a range of storage. With 1x PCIe 5.0, 2x PCIe 4.0, and 1x PCIe 3.0 slots. X670E Gigabyte motherboard list

Gigabyte has so far shown off its AORUS top-end selection, With only a few on the list so far they are gaming focused with a lot of power.

• X670E Aorus Xtreme – The top option of the range, it has 4x DIMM slots for 128 GB of DDR5 memory. Along with 1x Marvell 10Gb LAN, WiFi 6E, and 4x PCIe M.2 memory slots. The back offers 3x USB type C 3.2, 6x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 8x USB 2.0, and 4x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. It is sized at 30.5 cm x 26.9 cm.
• X670E Aorus Master – Also offering full DIMM support, it comes with a slower 2.5Gb Intel LAN port and WiFi 6E. It has 2x PCIe 5.0 and 2x PCIe 4.0 M.2 storage connectors. Whilst the back offers 1x USB C 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB C 3.2 Gen 2×2, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2, 8 USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 6x USB 2.0 ports.

X670E MSI motherboard list

Another top pick for motherboards is MSI who also has just a few selections to pick from.

• MEG X670E GODLIKE – The flagship motherboard has the support for 4x DDR5 DIMMs up to 128 GB. Featuring 4x M.2 slots, only one of which is PCIe 5.0 the rest are 4.0. It does have two LAN ports, a Marvell 10Gb and Intel 2.5 Gb, as well as a WiFi 6E module. For USB it has 4x USB 2.0 ports (Front), 4x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports (Front), 7x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports (Rear), 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C ports (Front), 2x USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type C ports (Rear), 1x USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type C ports (Front). Final word

Like we have seen with Nvidia and its RTX 4000 announcement we see only the top-spec options being revealed. This means if you want to build something sooner than later you will have to splash out. So it may be worth waiting for the cheaper non-E models or B650 boards to get a better choice.

However, if you are keen on an X670E motherboard there are a lot of options to pick from. Especially with ASUS’ great list, there are plenty to pick from. A lot of choices will come down to your needs like budget, design, and features. Since there is a lot of variety between all the options.

The X670E will be a great board if you really want to push your CPUs to the maximum with great overclocking. But also have great connectivity and seeds to keep everything running smoothly.

X670 and X670E motherboard FAQs

Will there be X670 motherboards?

Although currently there are mainly just X670E motherboards being listed the cheaper non-Extreme boards are on the way too. They may be released later as they are cheaper and less featureful so you may have to wait to get a better deal on your next-gen MOBO.

Whats the difference between X670 and X670E?

The main difference between the X670 and X670E is the PCIe 5.0 availability across the board. The E model offers it on both storage and PCIe slots, whilst the non-E only does so for one of the two. The Extreme board also is more focused on overclocking and will likely have much better VRMs and power options.

Is AM5 compatible with DDR4?

No, AMD has dropped support for DDR4 and the new AM5 platform only supports DDR5 memory. All motherboards will need to use it which should hopefully bring its price down.
