So, What is the meta Quest Pro FOV? Why does it matter? Let’s take a closer look and see what the Meta Quest Pro FOV is and whether it’s enough.
What is the Meta Quest Pro FOV?
Annoyingly, the official Meta website doesn’t list the FOV, however, several publications have managed to agree that the Meta Quest FOV is 100-110°, measured horizontally. This is an increase over the ~95° of the Meta Quest 2, which is a sorely needed improvement.
What does FOV stand for?
FOV stands for ‘field of view’. Which is the ‘extent of the observable world that is seen at any given moment’. in layman’s terms, this simply refers to how much you can see.
This is normally measured horizontally, due to the binocular vision that humans have, as a result of having two eyes side-by-side. vertical FOV is a thing too, but it matters far, far less than horizontal. if our eyes were stacked one on top of the other, then we’d be concerned about vertical FOV.
Anyway, now we know what FOV means, let’s have a look at why it matters, specifically when it comes to VR.
Why is FOV important for VR?
Well, the closer the FOV can get to the actual FOV of your eyes, the more realistic the view of the virtual world will be, with details becoming less clear toward the extremities of your vision, similar to real life.
Additionally, there is a consideration of motion sickness. According to Thomas Stoffregen, a kinesiologist at the University of Minnesota, around 40-70% of people experience motion sickness after 15 minutes of use.
This is a result of the brain seeing something different from what the body is feeling, and yes, FOV affects this. After all, if your brain is used to seeing more than it does when using a VR headset, it’s unsurprising that motion sickness can arise.
So the Meta Quest Pro’s FOV is around 100-110 degrees, which is still less than the 135-degree FOV of the naked eye. This means that there is still a chance of motion sickness, but less so, given the increase over the Meta Quest 2.
