Building a gaming PC for under 300 dollars can be tough, but thanks to AMD’s impressive range of APUs, it’s incredibly possible while still achieving decent entry-level performance. This is the best gaming PC build under $300. At the heart of our build sits the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G. It comes equipped with Radeon Vega graphics, which is surprisingly good at handling low-intensive games such as CS2 and Fortnite.
Let’s quickly note what this build has to offer in terms of performance and features, and while we’re at it, let’s discuss some of the roadblocks we encountered and why we chose this hardware for our $300 gaming PC build.
$300 gaming PC build of the month
The $300 gaming PC might not be the be also and end all of gaming PCs, but it’s a fantastic start, or would even make a great gift to a child or someone just getting into PCs and PC building. The Ryzen 5 5600G carries 6 cores and 12 threads, with a maximum boost clock of 4.4GHz. This is plenty for gaming workloads on the CPU side, but what about the GPU? As we said, there is no GPU, but there is a GPU component in the APU we have chosen, the Ryzen 5 5600G has a Radeon Vega GPU core count of 7 with a max speed of 1900MHz, which again, isn’t bad for an APU. We;ve paired the 5600G with all the compatible hardware it needs, such as the ASRock A520m motherboard, and 16GB of 3200MHz memory. When it comes to the 5000 series Ryzen, the faster the memory, the better the CPU will perform.
AMD APUs
An APU, for those wondering, is an accelerated processing unit. What sets this apart from a normal CPU is the fact that comes with its own integrated graphics built-in. Unlike Intel CPUs, an AMD APU comes with Vega graphics, which is much more powerful than a comparable iGPU in Intel processors. The 5600G comes with Radeon Vega graphics that showcase similar performance levels to a GT 1030. Which is impressive for such a small form factor.
The integrated graphics of an APU fully depend on your system’s RAM when in use, as there’s no VRAM built into the CPU. For that reason, equipping your build with fast RAM is essential when trying to achieve maximum performance out of your APU.

At this price range, we’ve opted for one of AMD’s latest APUs – the 5600G. While this isn’t the most impressive CPU out there, it’s certainly one of the best for gaming on an entry-level budget. It will be able to play older generation games at playable frame rates, including CS:GO, LOL, and Rocket League. Despite most of the components within this build being fairly entry-level, you still get adequate storage and sufficient RAM.

We’ve gone for a Silicon Power DDR416GB 3200MHz RAM kit for our $300 build, as it offers excellent performance at a relatively low price tag. It’s pretty much the perfect pairing for the Ryzen APU. With 16GB at your disposal, you are in a great spot to begin with and won’t need to upgrade for a long time.

This $300 build has no GPU selected because the Ryzen 5 5600G acts as both a CPU and a GPU.
We’ve decided to go for an SSD over the more traditional HDD in this build because it adds so much to the performance and overall usability of this system. Even though we’re losing roughly 750GB of storage capacity by going for an SSD, we’re making up for it with much faster boot/load times. If you want your OS and games to load lightning-fast, then an SSD is the way to go. If you want more storage and don’t care about speed, you should opt for a HDD.
The Cooler Master Q300L PC Case isn’t going to win any awards for style, but this entry-level case still has a lot to offer. Cooler Master is equipped it with one pre-installed 120mm fan, giving you some cooling straight out of the box. What Games Can This $300 Custom Gaming PC Run?
This build will provide 60FPS in all competitive online titles, however, if you are looking to play more demanding titles, then you would have to look at the $500 build to achieve 60FPS and above. Additionally, the dedicated graphics card and a more powerful CPU would allow you to raise the graphical settings and resolution in all titles. Looking at demanding single-player games such as The Witcher 3, you would be looking at 30FPS at 900p, but well-optimized titles like Forza Horizon 4 allow for 50FPS at 1080p and still look incredible even on Very Low graphical settings.

One of the main goals for the $300 custom build was to create a gaming PC that could handle some gaming in the short term. The idea behind an entry-level PC such as this is that you upgrade and save for a dedicated GPU later down the line – further boosting your in-game experiences. AMD’s APU range makes this far easier than it used to be. The 5600G is the best APU we could go for and remain under budget, but that wasn’t a bad thing. By opting for an APU, we no longer had to worry about the cost of a dedicated GPU. This means we could bolster other areas of this build like memory.
Let’s be honest, you aren’t buying this build to play AAA games in 4K/ultra settings, you’d have to invest in something like a $2000 gaming PC to do that. This build is tailored towards low-intensity games such as CS2, Fortnite, and Overwatch. The APU should be able to give you 60+FPS on these games on low-medium settings. One of the main things you need to consider at the start of your custom PC build journey is your budget. A lot of people come to us expecting to splash $300 on a custom build that can smash 4k games at 100fps. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Our $300 build has been custom-designed to play less intensive esports titles. Understanding the limitations of your budget at the start will save you time and frustration in the long run.

However, it must be noted that Ryzen chips are extremely well-optimized out-of-the-box. Gaining significant performance increases is probably out of reach on this platform, simply because the APU handles both workloads of the CPU and the GPU, it’ll get too hot if you overclock them both. This might be something to look forward to when you get that all-important dedicated GPU. Remember though, Overclocking can be dangerous and will have a detrimental effect on your hardware in the long run.

I would not water-cool this build, or add the Darkflash DLM 21 either. This is a really stripped-back, low-end gaming PC, for me, it doesn’t warrant that level of hardware. As far as streaming goes, you can get away with very light OBS type scenarios. I would not use this for streaming games.

You;re better off using Windows 10. there are issues when using windows 7 and the latest Ryzen APU’s.

Hi Patrick, you COULD use the 300 build as a streaming PC. However, you might want to consider the quality of your stream. Is this for Twitch? a 300 build is going to struggle to provide HD quality content, purely because it doesn’t support the necessary encoder to do so.
I bought all of these parts and followed the steps in building this pc and it didn’t work. I don’t have any extra money to pay for anymore parts after buying this pc. The B450 gives you a bit more headroom for future upgrades but yes both can be used. The A320 is a MAX board so you can of course upgrade to a 3rd-gen AMD CPU if you wish to in the future.

Boi, if you want to watch TELEVISION, you should get an Apple TV box + remote for like 200 for the latest version, or even around 50 for another good one. and it comes with Apple TV with subscription as well as Netflix, Hulu, HBO, HBO go, disney+, etc. SAVE MONEY. USING A PC FOR A TV???? WHAT THE HECK PEOPLE?

Hi Jana, great question. The 2200G can play these titles but it would low FPS only im afraid unless you lower your resolution to 720p. Upgrading this build to feature the suggested graphics card would give you much better graphical performance.

I got it working, I loosened the the screws that you put the mobo onto the case and it worked. I diddnt even screw it tight but do you know why this could happen?

You don’t really need to tighten your motherboard down too tight for future reference. Also, just make sure you have used the correct motherboard screws. You will be able to find out in the case manual.
Hello Im not a super techy person but I was wondering how adding more ram to this build would work. For example could I add 4x 4gb ram cards (I bought 1 set already). Would it be okay to do that? that way it would total to 16 gb? My budget went up but I dont want to return and buy the 8gb set because my location takes 2-3 weeks for shipping. That would be fine Izaiah. The motherboard has 4RAM slots, so adding 4 x 4GB RAM sticks would be perfect. It would also increase the performance of the APU exponentially.

Hi, I saw this line in the upgrade section under the 2TB HDD. I am a complete computer noobie looking to possibly make my first budget build from this list of parts. From someone that knows nothing about computers, it appears to me that the only storage space listed in the build is the 240GB SSD, so I was just wondering about that quote saying the initial build has 1TB of space. Is there somewhere else that storage soace is coming from? And I realize this might have been a silly question to more experienced PC enthusiasts.

We have a similar system in work that we’ve done some in-game benchmarking with and the results were pleasantly good. However, graphically, you are going to struggle to run OBS and a game and get the FPS levels you would require to create a decent video.

Hi, I have purchased everything on this list except for the MB I chose the asrock B450m hdv r4.0 to my knowledge this is a compatible replacement but please let me know if this is incompatible. (its cheaper aswell) Also I was looking into the ram and many peaple say that it is not clocked at the advertized speed, should I be worried about this? Is an overclock necessary to reach the advertized speed?

The ASRock B450m is 100% compatible with this build. As far as the RAM goes, you need to first make sure that your MB can accommodate 3000Mhz RAM.
If it can, you need to go into your BIOS and select the XMP profile for the higher clocked RAM.

Hi Patrick, you COULD use the 300 build as a streaming PC. However, you might want to consider the quality of your stream. Is this for Twitch? A 300 build is going to struggle to provide HD quality content, purely because it doesn’t support the necessary encoder to do so. You might be better off investing in an Nvidia GPU that supports the latest NVENC

All you’ll need is a screwdriver & an anti-static wristband (if you wanted to be extra safe). Other than that, you’re good to go.

It would depend entirely on what you meant by sufficiently? What graphics are we talking about, and what FPS you would like to achieve :]
A 2400G and 16gb 3200Mhz RAM would certainly bolster this build, however.
do you need a heatsink fan and thermal paste?
A heatsink comes as standard with the CPU, as does thermal paste (pre applied to the stock heatsink). However, for more powerful builds and when budget isn’t restricted, we would suggest purchasing third party thermal paste and a third party heatsink as they can provide significantly better cooling which work far more effectively with more powerful CPUs which generate more heat, as well as those used for overclocking.

Hi Timothy, unfortunately not. The pre-built computers we recommend would have Windows OS installed when it is delivered. However, for building your own computer, it would be necessary to install an operating system yourself, such as Windows 10. It is quite a simple process, however we are putting a guide together for people who haven’t done this before.
Will you see preformance benefits if you upgrade the APU to a ryzen 5 instead of the 3?

Are you referring to the 2400G? If so, then yes you would see some performance benefits as the 2400G comes equipped with Vega 11 graphics whereas the 2200g only has Vega 8.
The greatest performance gains that can be achieved – as far as an APU is concerned – come from upgrading your RAM.
I know next to nothing about computer specs let alone building a computer. If I was to purchase this I plan to give the parts to a friend for them to assemble. My question is are these parts for the actual computer or just the CPU box thing?

Bud, I run games with an ancient 4th gen i5 with much crappier integrated iris graphics and 4 gb of ram. It all depends on what you expect to run.

Hi Michael! Do you mean you have an AB350M-DS3H motherboard? If so, this shouldn’t support the G4400 since this motherboard is an AM4 socket while the G4400 is an LGA1151 socket.

But take note, it only has an integrated graphics card. The one we have in this build has a GT 1030 graphics card. Playing games with this build is without a doubt, better and smoother than HP Pavilion Desktop – 570 – P055QE.

yes you can run GTA V via FiveM. In fact, this rig could run GTA V smoothly with 40-50fps on very high in-game settings.
Can it run fortnite?
I wouldn’t count on any serious performance. You can try though. Better off with a used console or pc for the same price, though.
You would have to tweak the settings graphically, but yes, this build could achieve decent FPS in fortnite.

It never hurts to have additional RAM when using an APU such as the 2200G in this build.
If it’s in the budget Id recommend using it. What is the clock speed of the 16GB you’re looking at?
16gb is worth the upgrade. I’d reccomend corsair vengeance over the vipers personally.
