Ok, we’re all aware that Crytek is planning to re-release Crysis, a game series that, for the longest time, was a staple in PC benchmarking thanks to its insane graphics (for the time), and that the remaster of Crysis is going to include things like Temporal Anti Aliasing, new light settings, particle effects, and a brand new HD texture pack – but it looks like Crytek could have been beaten to the punch.

The modding group Remaster Studio have released their Crysis Enhanced Edition Mod, which aims to push the game’s graphics to the max, and with it, players might have the chance to see what a fully remastered and touched up Crysis game looks like.

The mod contains 4K structures, indirect sky lighting, max particles, and particle lighting, as well as 8K rocks and grounds and reworked interior lighting – as well as much, much more. Right now, you can pick the mod up from the Remaster Studio Patreon page here, and check out how it runs in the original Crysis for yourself – or just watch the Youtube trailer I embedded above.

The question that a lot of Crysis fans are going to be asking themselves now is going to be a pretty simple one; How is the official Crysis Remastered going to differ from the modded version? If I’m being completely honest, then my answer would be that we might be seeing a more comprehensive overhaul in the official remastered release, as the Crytek team are going to be upscaling more than just textures, with retouched assets, different sound logs and much more in store for fans of the franchise.

That’s not to disparage what Remaster Studio has accomplished here though. The modding team has managed to get a game that was released in 2007 completely polished up and in a state to remind people why the question ‘but can it run Crysis?’ was so popular alongside the release of every game in the trilogy.

Interestingly, it looks like Remaster Studio is also working on a similar mod for Crysis’ 2008 standalone expansion Crysis Warhead – which should breathe some more life into the Crysis franchise alongside the official remaster and this impressive community-led mod.

The big question a lot of gamers have on their mind though is whether or not this official remaster is part of a larger campaign to get gamers reintroduced to the Crysis series before they officially unveil Crysis 4 – a possibility, one that’s backed up by a whole host of rumors, but only time will tell if Crysis is going to come back to the forefront of PC gaming and set the standard when it comes to ultra settings enabled FPS gameplay.
