Lost Ark has finally arrived in the West. And it looks as though the long-anticipated launch is exceeding early expectations. Players have been anxious to access the game for some time, and now that it has arrived they are logging on in droves. And now Lost Ark has hit its biggest milestone so far, with over 1.3 Million concurrent players in the game.

The Numbers game

Due in part to a huge amount of players pre-loading the game, Lost Ark’s launched day racked up 984,111 concurrent players right away. An impressive peak, but one that was quickly overshadow by its following day. 1,325,305 players were active at the same time, sending Lost Ark right to the top of the Steam top 100. Not only did Lost Ark beat out Counter Strike and Dota 2 for the day, it topped their all-time concurrent player records to boot!

Though these numbers are undoubtedly impressive, they aren’t quite an all-time best. PUBG still holds the all-time top spot on Steam with over 3 million concurrent players.

But these are still early days. Given time and word of mouth, who knows how many players Lost Ark could accrue?

Lost Ark: An Exodus from Elsewhere

So, where did all these players come from? Lost Ark has been an anticipated release for some time. But there are other factors in play to explain the hype surrounding the title. And most crucial among them would be the void left by World of Warcraft.

Even as the Shadowlands expansion gears up to release its final patch, many feel as if the damage has already been done for the aging MMO. WoW has experienced a dwindling player count for some time now, and the mixed reaction to Shadowlands has proven the final straw for many. But World of Warcraft’s loss is other MMOs’ gain. The genre is still immensely popular with a wide subset of gamers. And without WoW to sate them, player have gone in search of other titles to invest their time into.

Final Fantasy 14 has seen the lion’s share of this surge in interest. The Endwalker expansion suffered from issues at launch due to the sheer number of players attempting to access the game. To the point where sales of the game were suspended until the fervour died down a little.

Lost Ark is clearly now experiencing a similar influx of players and enthusiasm. And so far, it seems equipped to handle it. Though some players are reporting similar login issues to those that plagued Endwalker, it hasn’t stopped the game from reaching truly impressive player milestones thus far.
