Graphics just keep improving year after year, games are coming out with ever more demanding system requirements with their opulent look. That means the likes of NVIDIA’s GTX 10 series might not be cutting it anymore, so here is a look at why you might consider upgrading your GPU with Gigabyte, and how Christmas is the time to do so.

The state of game graphics

There have been plenty of game releases that don’t quite reach the performance you’d expect. Cyberpunk 2077 had a bit of a rocky start when it was released in 2020, with performance not where it needed to be. But now it is known for pushing the capabilities of what even the top-tier GPUs can achieve. As with the Phantom Liberty DLC, you get path tracing that requires you to use DLSS 3 or lower settings to get something playable.

Then more recently Cities Skylines 2 shocked by recommending an NVIDIA GeForce™ RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT in its requirements, so it’s becoming key to upgrade if you are rocking a Pascal or similar card. It is for good reason though, enjoying high framerates, great visual quality, and plenty of features to take advantage of. Ray tracing visuals have never been better. That requires horsepower to run and some help from upscaling tech.

The power of the RTX 40 series

Now the latest generation of NVIDIA graphics cards has plenty to offer up when deciding on which GPUs you want to go for. They have as always come with a shedload of power and more importantly plenty of efficiency improvements.

Of course, at the top of the ladder, you can find the NVIDIA GeForce™ RTX 4090, which as we’ve seen in our review, comes with a lot of power, nothing can come close to it. Shredding hundreds of FPS even at 4K, is quite the card to have at hand, but it’s clearly not for everyone.

RTX 40 series lineup

With a whole range of cards to choose from, it’s not just the top that you may have to consider. But NVIDIA has got quite the range to go for and pick from for a range of budgets. These come at various prices and different custom models offer even more choices with different looks and overclocked frequencies.

These are the options and their recommended pricing to pick from when they launched:

  • RTX 4090 – £1,579
  • RTX 4080 – £1,139
  • RTX 4070 Ti – £799
  • RTX 4070 – £589
  • RTX 4060 Ti – £399/£499
  • RTX 4060 – £289

As you go down the list, you lower down the framerates and resolutions you can expect. Going from 4K with the 4090 and 4080, to 1440p or the 4070 Ti and 4070, to 1080p of 4060 Ti and 4060. That gives you some flexibility as to what you get to fit your display and needs.

Features of the RTX 40 series

As for what the Ada graphics cards have to offer, one of the biggest talking points is the frame generation technology embedded in the GPUs. Frame Generation uses AI to generate entirely new frames. Allowing the use of DLSS 3 does require implementation in each of the games, but it makes the usage ever so much better. Interpolating those frames makes it all the smoother integration and gives you a seamless experience. The addition of Optical Multi Frame Generation creates whole new frames to slot in between but also integrates NVIDIA’s Reflex technology. That makes sure the latency between your input and game reaction doesn’t deteriorate. All that is possible from the fourth generation Tensor Cores and the Optical Flow Accelerator found in the Ada series.

One of the best implementations of this tech is in Cyberpunk 2077 providing some of the biggest improvements in graphical quality. Even the top 4090 using path tracing in the game benefits heavily from turning on DLSS 3 to get higher framerates and better looks.

Why upgrade now?

Well, now the pricing and performance are achievable across the board to everyone. With plenty of stock around, the pricing is staying as it should, and even dropping lower in some circumstances. That means you can upgrade your older GPU and see some great performance improvements. Or if you’re building a PC, the NVIDIA GeForce™ RTX 40 series offers a great value to go for.

Christmas sales

Now as we approach the holiday season, the GPU sales are rolling in. That means even greater savings on your GPUs. The likes of Gigabyte graphics cards are available for cheaper over at Scan. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday being gone, there will be time and opportunity to grab even more discounts.

But of course, that’s not the only retailer and option to opt for. But it certainly is the time to do it, as upgrading has never been better to choose from. You can find the perfect graphics card for your needs, for an even better price, so don’t miss out on some fantastic Christmas GPU deals.
