AMD is officially putting its X670 and X670E chipset motherboards on sale today, September 27th, along with its AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. But some X670E motherboards are available to buy right now.

Although the official release time is unknown, we can start to see motherboards popping up for sale on Amazon. We have even seen some Ryzen CPUs popping up on Amazon before anywhere else.

Ryzen 7000 series listings

In the market for a new Ryzen 7000 series CPU? here are some early listings.

Do I need a new motherboard for the Ryzen 7000 series?

X670E motherboards are available to buy right now

The short answer is yes. You do need a new motherboard for the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs for a number of reasons. The most glaring of which is the massively different socket the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs require.

Socket

The AM4 motherboard used the AM4 socket, A PGA socket type meaning the pins are on the CPU, not in the motherboard. The new AM5 motherboards use the LGA socket architecture, meaning the pins are located in the motherboard socket instead of on the underside of the CPU.

This means Ryzen 7000 series CPUs are incompatible with AM4 motherboards.

Memory

The new Ryzen 7000 series CPUs are designed for the DDR5 memory standard, meaning there’s no current support for DDR4 memory on either the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs or AM5 motherboards. And as far as we’re aware, there aren’t any plans to introduce support or manufacture AM5 DDR4 compatible motherboards.

That’s about it for the changes on the AM5 platform, As it turns out, AMD decided to let you keep something from your old system. And that is your CPU cooler.

AM5 AM4 cooler compatibility.

AM5 motherboards, and by extension Ryzen 7000 series CPUs, are compatible with AM4-based CPU coolers. So the CPU cooler you used on your last-gen Ryzen CPUs will fit here too.

However, recent benchmarks have indicated that the new Ryzen 7000 series CPUs run very hotly. And it’s advised you use a high-end liquid-based CPU cooler to counteract the new higher TDPs the CPUs bring.

Even with a 360mm AIO liquid cooler, we still managed to get the Ryzen 7 7600X to 91°C at full load.

What’s the difference between X670 and X670E?

The main difference is that the X670E offers much better overclocking compared to the X670. The X670 still has overclocking capabilities, it’s just less fleshed out. Offering less premium VRMs and power stages.

Both of these chipsets offer PCIe Gen 5 capabilities just to different extents. The higher-end X670E motherboard offer PCIe Gen 5 on X16 GPU slots and over M.2 storage. Whereas the X670 chipset may offer only one, mainly the X16 GPU slot.

The X760E (Extreme) has a heavier focus on onboard cooling, you’ll often see the X670E chipset motherboard covered in thermal armor and cooling solutions, mainly for VRMs and heatsinks. The X670 motherboards do still have these features, just to a lesser extent.

Final Word

Just because X670E motherboards are available to buy right now, does not mean you have to buy one right now. Waiting will probably result in a better price, but if you can’t wait, we’re happy to facilitate.

Paired with the early release of some Ryzen 7000 series through some retailers, you could have a whole system sooner than everyone else.
