Ever since the release of ChatGPT to the public, the AI boom has accelerated massively over the past year. But what is Apple GPT? Well, many of the top players in the industry have been quick to develop their own AI tech and frameworks, Google and Microsoft being major proponents recently. Apple have been a little more secretive, but the so-called Apple GPT could be on its way relatively soon.

We should first say that Apple haven’t come out and announced anything officially, but they have slowly been integrating machine learning into their tech, with some implementation being shown off early with their Apple Vision Pro headset and operating systems, like iOS 17. We want to talk all about Apple GPT though – what is it? And will it be a good rival to OpenAI and the like?

What is Apple GPT?

Apple GPT is expected to be exactly as it sounds – a rival to the ChatGPT chatbot which can perform a multitude of tasks as per your requests (in text form). Since not much is known about the upcoming chatbot, we don’t no whether or not it will actually be called Apple GPT, though we expect another naming convention to be announced. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple are currently working on an AI tool currently referred to as Apple GPT internally.

Based on the report, the framework is already there for creating large language models (LLM), which is currently dubbed Ajax within the company. With Apple starting to ramp up their AI implementation, a chatbot app seems like a logically step forward to rival what is already out there. With the development of Google Bard and Microsoft Copilot, Apple GPT will look to jump in on the chatbot craze and provide Apple users a powerful tool for information and text generation with simple prompts.

Do we know when Apple GPT will be released?

It is currently unknown whether this will be available to the public any time soon. Right now, Apple employees are reported to be able to use the Apple GPT tool internally, with executives at the company not yet sure when it will reach a wider audience.

This could to due to a number of security concerns, something that Apple strongly focus design and business practices on in general. Right now, specific approval is required for employees and the chatbot tool can’t be used for developing features which could end up in the hand of customers – some serious security measures.

Apple AI and machine learning features

When it comes to all things AI, Apple tend to refer to it as machine learning, though there is no difference between them in case you’re wondering. Either way, Apple have already been implementing machine learning features into their existing tech – and Apple GPT will come along to compliment what we see so far, generally using Apple’s Core ML framework.

For example, iOS 17 and other Apple operating systems enjoy improved autocorrect and predictive text thanks to the use of a transformer language model, similar to how ChatGPT works. In what Apple describes as ‘on-device machine learning’, iOS 17 also provides you with personalized suggestions for journal entries.

For the upcoming Apple Vision Pro, their previous WWDC conference shared more about machine learning attributes on the mixed reality headset. One of them being the user’s Persona. If wearing the headset, a digital representation of the user is created using Apple’s current machine learning techniques. This relays both face and hand movements in real time during FaceTime calls.

Apple GPT FAQs

Has Apple GPT been announced?

No, there hasn’t been an official announcement regarding Apple GPT. However, some sources claim that more will be revealed during 2024 about the upcoming Apple chatbot.

What does GPT stand for?

In the case of ChatGPT, GPT stands for Pre-Trained Transformer. Since Apple will be using similar techniques to create their AI chatbot, people are currently dubbing it Apple GPT in the same fashion.
