Elden Ring is an epic game that exceeds everyone’s expectations in terms of gameplay and story, with a Metacritic score of 97% on PS5 but just 95% on PC. The difference in score is because of some major performance issues on the PC port, Elden ring is sadly in need of an Elden ring FPS fix.
Like many games before it, Elden ring has suffered a case of the post-launch jitters with players reporting game-breaking stuttering left right and centre. 

Panic not brave adventurer, as there are a few CPU related tips and tricks we can deploy to help fend off the stutters until the developers can implement a more permanent fix in a later game patch.

How do you fix stuttering in Elden ring? 

Straight to the point, there isn’t any significant be all and end all fixes right now, but there are a couple of tricks you can try to improve the stutter and your overall experience in Elden Ring. Before we start you should ensure you have installed the Day One patch for Elden Ring. 

Elden Ring Day One patch 

The Elden Ring Day One patch was released when the game became available to play. Some regions saw the game unlock as early as the 24th of February. But unless you have been playing Elden ring offline this whole time to avoid player invasions, it’s likely you already have this patch installed. 

The patch has stated that some of the pre-launch performance issues have been fixed and with it has come other quality of life fixes.

Applying the patch will in some ways help performance and reduce stuttering, however as previously mentioned you do require this patch to play online so it’s likely you have already had it. 

Ensure your PC meets Elden Ring system requirements.

In order to determine the performance of a game before the game’s release gamers seek out the system requirements released by game developers. 

These system requirements usually have a minimum and a recommended section displaying what hardware your PC should contain to achieve a good experience.

Close all none essential programs and CPU heavy applications.

Freeing up system resources is always a must when loading up a particularly performance heavy PC game. Closing things like Google Chrome and editing software might free up the RAM and CPU cores you need to get the game running smoothly. 

It’s easy – just exit the program or app or kill the task in Task Manager if you want a quick execution. Make sure you save your work first of course. 

Lower settings and resolution.

It’s not the ideal fix as it could take away from the whole Elden ring experience, but if you lower your settings a little it will decrease the load on both the GPU and the CPU allowing your PC more resource headroom to run the game, this should decrease stuttering.

This would only be a temporary Elden ring stutter fix until the developers implement something more long term in a later patch.

Enable XMP.

Enabling or ensuring XMP is enabled in your motherboard BIOS could be the Elden ring low FPS fix you need. XMP stands for “extreme memory profile” and is required to achieve RAM speeds faster than your motherboard supports natively. 

XMP isn’t always named XMP on some AMD motherboards – it’s labelled D.O.C.P but is essentially the same thing. 

Speaking of AMD, RAM speeds are vastly more important to Ryzen processors than Intel processors as core communication speeds on AMD CPUs are directly correlated with RAM speed. Meaning faster RAM makes for a faster CPU.

Overclocking your CPU to prevent stutters

Applying A CPU overclock could be the Elden ring FPS fix you’re looking for. Overclocking can be beneficial to you if you’re wanting to improve the longevity of your CPU or maximise its performance.

Overclocking should only be considered if you have a cooling system able to handle the extra TDP generated by the increased voltage, as heat is the byproduct of CPU operation that grows exponentially when overclocks are applied.
