The RTX 40 series range has finally got a bit more affordable, and with the mid-range filling, we compare the RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070. These are successive models and offer different price points and performance levels. And it does get muddied with the 4060 Ti arriving with two models of 8GB and 16GB, so what differences can you expect?

We’ve now seen the release of the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti, during May 2023. While the 16GB model came out in July of the same year but without much news and info on the day. Whereas the RTX 4070 came out in April in 2024. As such, if you’re planning on buying the 4060 Ti or 4070 there are some decisions to make, so we see which is the better option.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 architecture

As both the RTX 4060 Ti and 4070 belong to the same generation, the two graphics cards will be based on the same architecture and manufacturing process. They share some of the important upgrades that make up the Ada Lovelace architecture such as 4th-gen Tensor Cores for better AI acceleration and the DLSS 3.0 with frame generation. These are some of the key aspects that Nvidia are pushing as part of the 40-series, especially as more games look to support the technology to help boost frames via machine learning techniques.

Where they differ is the GPU variant of the processor that will dictate its cores and performance. As well as the memory and such. For the 4060 Ti, you have the AD106-350/351, for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively. Although they don’t change the processor fully just vary on memory later on. It is made with TSMC’s 5nm process with 22.9 billion transistors on a die size of 190mm². Whereas the RTX 4070 is the AD104-250 variant with a die size of 295mm². And it features 35.8 billion transistors on it.

The table shows us the core differences in how the graphics cards’ specs. These can tell you where the performance change comes from and as such show what might be worth it more. As we can see, and expect, the RTX 4070 is a higher-performing GPU between these Nvidia GeForce RTX cards. But how much of an upgrade exactly? Well, we discuss the specifications in more detail below.

VRAM

Video memory is the key to performance at higher resolutions. This is used to store and buffer pixels used for game graphics. So when resolutions get higher the pixel count gets higher and more capacity and memory bandwidth are required to utilize it fully and provide a smooth experience at those different resolutions.

Now between the RTX 4060 Ti vs 4070, there is some change. Initially, the Ti card has just 8GB of GDDR6 at a bandwidth of 288GB/s. But also with a 16GB variant. But this will also have the same speeds and the RTX 4070 will be the one on top, as even though it has 12GB of GDDR6X, it has a speed of 504.2GB/s across the wider 192-bit bus. Which does make it a better viable choice for high resolutions such as 4K instead.

The total graphics power of a card is how much electrical power it will draw from your system. Important when deciding on the best PSU for your system, and how much you will be paying for your bills. And opting for the lower model in the 4060 Ti is the more economical choice. With a 40/35W lower rating that the 4070 option which might be a consideration for trying to have a cheaper build over time, as long as the performance is enough for you.

Frequency

The frequency and core clocks are how fast the processor runs and create those graphics that you get to see. Between the two, the lower card has a higher base and boost clock. This means it is faster, but not the core significance in the performance difference between them. And even overclocking GPUs won’t provide enough of a boost but can give you a little jump in performance.

Core counts

The biggest difference you’ll find is the difference in the cores. With different variants they have a different count of cores in it, to differentiate the models. And you can see the CUDA count between them varies. With 1,536 more in the 4070 that gives it that better overall performance, as well as the ray tracing ability as those change too.

How much more expensive is the 4070 than the 4060 Ti?

With an MSRP of $599, the 4070 is $200/100 more than the RTX 4060 Ti. That is with the 8GB model’s $399 and the 16GB model’s $499 price point. Both of these cards are relatively new, so availability is much higher, and as such the competition is strong. If you’re building a new gaming PC, you need to of course consider all parts – and the RTX 4060 Ti is a good inexpensive option with all components considered. The reduced power output means it’s compatible with less powerful PSUs and doesn’t require high-end external cooling.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 performance

Where the biggest difference you’ll find is the RTX 4070 is capable of 4K. TechSpot’s review shows it achieving an average of 69FPS at 4k, along with 126 at 1440p and 175 at 1080p. This means the 4060 Ti 8GB is below that, and definitely not a 4K card, instead better for 1440p and especially 1080p. Yet again, TechSpot reveals a 15-game average in modern titles including Cyberpunk 2077 and Modern Warfare 2. For the 4060 Ti, here are the results: 111FPS at 1080p, 78 at 1440p, and just 38 at 4K. While for the 16GB option, we have to wait just a bit longer to find out its true performance, since no reviews still have not arrived even on release.

These raw performance values aren’t really much of an improvement over the RTX 3060 Ti, which really shows that Nvidia has put a strong focus on AI acceleration capabilities as well as power efficiency. In games that support it, DLSS 3.0 will help propel these cards beyond those framerates, albeit with downsides such as added input latency and minor graphical downgrades.

So, in summary, the RTX 4070 is much more capable at higher resolutions than expected, making it more future-proof in turn. Both of the cards are efficient, but the RTX 4060 Ti is the one you want to go for if primarily focusing on 1080p and maximum power saving.

Is the 4070 worth it over the 4060 Ti?

Comparing the RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 you get two different levels. One more focuses on 1080p or 1440p and the other is edging in on 4K. So it comes to what you want from your system. For solid 1440p performance, the 4060 Ti is decent, though it could be worth sticking to 1080p if you want maximum performance. From the benchmarks, you can see the 4060 Ti 8GB reaches an average of just under 80FPS in 1440p. So for something stronger, the 4070 is a better option as it averages 126FPS at 1440p, and even 69FPS at 4K.
