iOS Beta 6 is out now! More specifically, both iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 and iOS 16 Public Beta 4 have been released. Read below for more on our iOS 16 Developer Beta 7 release date predictions as well as what’s in the new iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 / Public Beta 4.
You can download iOS 16 Public Beta 4 and the iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 right now and try them out, though we’d advise having a read of the below page first as installing either can cause irretrievable data loss on your device. We’ve made a prediction below as to when we think Apple will seed iOS 16 Developer Beta 7.
See below for all the latest features on the new iOS 16 Developer Beta 6, iOS 16 Public Beta 4, plus how to download and install both of them.
iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 release date
iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 is the latest update for those signed-up to the developer program. The iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 release date was August 15th, 2022. This came substantially sooner than previous Beta releases, with a gap of only a week since the last Developer Beta.
iPadOS & iOS 16 Developer Beta 6 release notes
You can read more about all the detailed changes in the latest iOS 16 & iPadOS developer beta, in the iOS & iPadOS 16 Beta 6 release notes on the Apple developer site.
iOS 16 Public Beta 4 release date
The iOS 16 Public Beta 4 release date was August 15th, 2022. This is was the same date as Developer Beta 6, only a few hours later, and again shows Apple ramping up the speed of their Beta updates ahead of the full iOS 16 release.
iOS 16 Public Beta 4 changes
iOS 16 Public Beta is the version more suitable for the general public (but not without its risks). See the video below for all the latest changes in this version of the Beta.
The main changes in iOS 16 (regardless of the version of the Beta in question) include: an iCloud shared Photo Library, the ability to edit or unsend an iMessage, further customize the Lock screen wallpaper and clock, the ability to use the full-screen music player on the Lock Screen, Lockdown Mode, improved privacy on upcoming Calendar events, new Stage Manager splash screen and other features for iPad users, atrial fibrillation history (for those with the health condition), and various other cosmetic changes. If you’re a Fitness+ user there will also be new awards to win for completing challenges in the app.
Probably the thing we’re most excited about is the ability to avoid having to complete those awful CAPTCHA tests to prove whether or not you’re a human. Instead of having to click on the number of tractors/bridges/buses that you see, your iPhone / iPad will automatically communicate with Apple using Private Access Tokens to make sure you are in fact, not a robot.

- iOS 16 Developer Beta 7 release date: TBC. It’s unclear at this stage whether there will actually be a 7th developer beta, but it seems fairly likely that there will be at least one more before the official release, based on previous iOS Beta releases. iOS 15 had eight different Developer Betas in total.
iOS 16 Developer Beta 7 release date prediction
As it seems Apple are now ramping up ther frequency of their Beta releases, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see iOS 16 Developer Beta 7 released one week after Developer Beta 6, given this was the gap between the previous two Developer Betas. That being said, they could revert back to their previous, more fortnightly schedule. The iOS 16 Developer Beta 7 release date will therefore likely fall August 22nd – 29th.
iPad OS 16 public beta
So far all the Developer updates for the iPadOS 16 Beta have been released at the same time as the regular iOS 16 Developer Beta updates, and the same has been true for the Public Beta as well. We expect to see this pattern continue on until the full release of the OS.
Full iOS 16 release date: When is the iPhone 14 event?
The next Apple event scheduled in the calendar for 2022 is the iPhone 14 event.
This is when we expect to hear about the full release date of iOS 16, the completed non-Beta version.
Currently, we do not have a specific date for the iPhone 14 event, but we do know that September 2022 is when it will be taking place.
The full public release of iOS 16 will be shortly after.
iOS 16 Beta compatibility: does your iPhone support the iOS 16 public beta?
At a bare minimum, you will need an iPhone 8 or later model to run iOS 16, though there’s no guarantee that some of the features will work if you have an iPhone 8, iPhone 9, or iPhone 10.
Having an iPhone 11 or above will be necessary to access all features like Live Captions, Door Detection, and People Detection.

Should I download the iOS 16 Public Beta?
Installing beta versions of operating systems always comes with risk. This isn’t just an application you’re running, it’s the entire system through which your phone operates. It’s therefore not advisable to run the iOS 16 Public Beta on your main device if it’s the only phone you use, and has precious data/photos/info on it that you wouldn’t want to lose. Backing up this data is one solution, however you may also experience performance issues that disrupt your day-to-day life, and certain software applications that may not work entirely. If all of this doesn’t faze you though, and you’ve made the adequate precautions, then by all means go ahead.
How to sign up to the iOS 16 Public Beta
Assuming your phone is compatible, to download the iOS 16 Public Beta, simply head to beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/ and click Sign Up. Once the public Beta goes live you will then be able to download the file. Then simply head to Downloads, click on the beta file and Install Profile, then follow the steps of the installation wizard.
How to Install iOS 16 Public Beta
The nice people (I assume) at MacRumors have put together a quick handy guide on how to install the iOS 16 Public Beta, but they missed out one important first step: MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST! This cannot be emphasised enough.
How to uninstall iOS 16 Beta from your iPhone
If you’ve tried out the iOS Public Beta 16 and it’s not to your liking, or you’re having issues with the operation of your phone, there are ways to remove it.
The best way to uninstall the iOS 16 Beta is to use a PC/MacBook to erase and restore the iPhone, and either revert back to iOS 15.5 backup data (which hopefully you saved) or set it up as a new device.
- Make sure your PC/MacBook is fully up to date.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer and put it into recovery mode by pressing and releasing the volume up button, then the volume down button. Finally, press and hold the power button until you see the recovery mode screen.
- Click the prompt to Restore when it appears.
- The iPhone should then erase all the current data and begin downloading the last non-Beta iOS version (iOS 15.5).
- Install iOS 15.5 when prompted.
- Once this is complete you can then use your backup to restore your previous data (if you made one). If not, enjoy your new, clean iOS 15.5 installation.
Another way to uninstall the iOS 16 public beta is by deleting the beta profile, however this method will not revert your phone back to iOS 15, so it’s best to wait until the full, stable version of iOS 16 is released (for you to replace the Beta with) until trying this method.
- Simply head to: Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > iOS 16 Beta Profile > Remove Profile
- Restart your device.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the full iOS 16 version (when it’s been released).
