Elon Musk revealed his plans to come back into the world of AI with what he claimed “might be the best path to safety“. The plan is to create a rival Large Language Model to OpenAI, in an arms race where we already see a mixture of tech giants such as Google and Microsoft in the running, along with quite a few startups too. So What is TruthGPT?

Those in the know can see the name is awfully close to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot but in an interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Elon stated that he wanted to start something which he called “TruthGPT or a maximum truth-seeking AI“. His goal is to create a safer, well-regulated LM that cares about understanding the universe.

Musk helped fund the development of ChatGPT, however, was never in favor of the “for-profit” path the company had since taken.

What we know about TruthGPT so far

The whole idea is in its infancy stage but since X.AI was registered in March, the rumors haven’t stopped flying around. X.AI was incorporated in Nevada, with Elon listed as the sole director and Jared Birchall as the secretary.

  • According to Business Insider, Igor Babuschkin, the AI senior engineer from Deepmind (others believed to be joining) is on board to head up operations. Igor also spent time at OpenAI.
  • It has been reported that Elons recent acquisition of Twitter may be involved, with the Financial Times reporting that Twitter data may be used to train the X.AI Large Language Model.
  • Business Insider also claimed Elon recently purchased 10,000 GPUs from Nvidia for this project.

If TruthGPT does go ahead, one thing we do know is that it plans to be a direct competitor to ChatGPT.

Is TruthGPT tied to the Elon Musk “Everything App”?

Elon Musk hinted a while ago that he planned on building an everything app, which recently blew up with the registration of X.AI. Twitter was recently merged into a shell company called X Corp and we all know how much Elon loves the letter X.

This is all part of Elons potential vision for how he sees the future of social media and separate from the recent AI developments, although, an everything app could easily contain some form of APIs related to a large language model.

the best way to think about the new “super app” is to look at the Chinese sensation “WeChat”. WeChat does everything you need in one simple app, from payments to chatting with friends, something which doesn’t exist outside of China.

Is there a TruthGPT release date?

TruthGPT is merely a whisper in the wind at this stage, however, recent events do make it look as though Elon is jumping into AI.

What is X.AI?

X.AI is a new company founded by Elon Musk. Some suggest is has been created to compete with the likes of OpenAI.
