With the new RTX 40 series on the low to mid-range option, we see how it compares to old AMDs performance choices. So we see how the RTX 4060 Ti vs RX 6800 XT. These are at a different level but the performance improvements might bring them closer than we might expect. Now that the RTX 4060 Ti is widely available, it’s worth going a comparison before you decide on which GPU to buy.

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT was the popular option for its lineup. The best graphics card of its range coming in November of 2020. Now being surpassed it still holds up and you might compare it to the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. Let’s see how these GPUs from different generations and rivaling companies match up.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RX 6800 XT architecture

The two are already made by different manufacturers so it’s not an easy comparison to make when looking at what they’re made of. And with the addition of the generational difference, we can just see the basis of these cards and how they’re made.

For the GPU processor inside of it, the RX 6800 XT has a Navi 21 XT inside of it. Created on the RDNA 2 architecture, it is made with TSMCs 7nm process. With 26.8 billion transistors on a 520mm² dies size. Whereas the RTX 4060 Ti has two models with slight variation, either the AD106-350/351 for the 8GB and 16GB model. Although apart from capacity all else is the same. And the processor is on the Ada Lovelace architecture with TSMCs 5nm process on a dies size of 190mm² with 22.9 billion transistors. Ada Lovelace is the newer architecture, so it benefits more from modern specs. The 40-series enjoys new and improved 4th-Gen Tensor Cores, DLSS 3.0 frame generation and great ray tracing performance for realistic lighting and real-time reflections.

TGP

One of the biggest comparable differences, although reported differently, the total graphics power of a GPU is important as a comparison. Previously also known as TDP of thermal design point it’s meant to provide an idea of how much power the graphics card will use.

Where the RTX 4060 Ti vs RX 6800 XT differ greatly is their power consumption. With the 40 series card rated at 160/165W, a good lower rate over what the top range picks have to offer. But the 6800 XT is nearly double that at 300W. So if you’re planning on spending less on electricity and lower the heat the Nvidia option is better for it with its lower load temperature.

VRAM

What’s on everyone’s minds now when it comes to the capabilities of graphics cards is the VRAM. The video memory is the buffer point of the GPU when it comes to graphics and textures. The bigger resolutions require more storage and bandwidth to work well with the larger pixel counts they have.

So comparing the two, we see the 6800 XT have 16GB of GDDR6 at 512GB/s. Whilst the 4060 Ti has an 8GB and 16GB option, but with much lower bandwidth. Trying to alleviate that it implements a cache to resolve it. But the benchmarks will show its capabilities, but it’s more likely to target 1440p capabilities than the 6800 XTs more possible 4k.

Frequency

One of the other factors that contribute to the performance that even you can change is the frequency or core clocks of the graphics cards. This is how quickly the graphics get processed inside the silicon die.

Between the two we see a small 200MHz difference in the potential boost clock of them. Whilst in the game, the differences may vary still. As Nvidia has gotten faster clocks over the previous generation. These can also be altered by overclocking your GPU and squeezing more out of it.

Processor cores

What actually does the processing is inside the processor with the different cores. Shaders for graphics mainly, and the likes of ray tracing cores supporting other features. With various implementations and efficiencies, you get a different performance out of them. So you can’t really compare the two from different companies and generations but rather in the lineup instead. But it gives a good look at the differences between them.

How much cheaper is the 4060 Ti than 6800 XT?

Comparing the prices, we can see how much you can save from the lower-model Nvidia card. And in fact, the 4060 Ti is $250/150 cheaper than the 6800 XT. Since the card has two models, the 8GB has an MSRP of $399 and the 16GB of $499. So you do get a cheaper option as long as the performance is there as you want a good price for performance as well.

Prior to the release of the RTX 4060 Ti, Nvidia released a bunch of benchmarks praising the 4060 Ti as the ultimate 1080p GPU, with strong 1440p capabilities. However, much of this was based on DLSS 3.0 AI acceleration, and many people waited for the raw performance values. Well they are now here for everyone to see!

Now we can look at what the 6800 XT achieves. And in the TechSpot review, we see the card run around 197FPS average at 1080p, 157FPS at 1440p, and 93FPS at 4k. Whilst in the Techspot review of the 4060 Ti it is capable of 111, 78, and 38 FPS. Limited by the lower memory bus it is good up to 1440p 60 FPS. So obviously the 6800 XT is still the stronger card to go for. In the ever-growing list of games which support DLSS 3.0, you can still boost the performance of the 4060 Ti with frame generation tech. However, these aren’t raw performance gains and can hinder graphical fidelity or have you dealing with input lag.

Is the 4060 Ti worth it over the RX 6800 XT?

The 4060 Ti is worth it if you’re after 1080p, and some 1440p performance. But the 6800 XT is a better all-rounder with what it can achieve. Plus you’re more likely to find it for a better price as well and so might cut down the difference between them that makes it a stronger contender. And the 4060 Ti’s limited bandwidth might make it less future proof. If you’re looking for the most efficient build though, then the RTX 4060 Ti shines. Its incredibly low TGP marks it as one of the most efficient cards on the market, and it proves it be a stark difference to some last-gen options like the RX 6800 XT – which will run hot without appropriate cooling.
