If you’re still rocking a Pascal card, things have certainly changed in the years since their release. Changing from GTX to RTX brought plenty of improvements to the whole lineup. So an upgrade would be in order for you to enjoy a whirlwind of improvements. In that case, we compare how the RTX 4070 Super vs GTX 1080 Ti to see what improvements it provides.
The GTX 1080 Ti originally came out in March of 2017, which doesn’t seem to be all too long ago. But in that time the flagship has fallen down in the ranks and advancements have come to graphics cards in a whole new way. As for the RTX 4070 Super, which was released in January 2024 is the upgrade for the Ada series. So in the seven years between the two, how do the 4070 Super vs 1080 Ti compare?

In the seven years between the two, there has been plenty of changes. Not just incremental steps but a giant leap, something harder to see between successive generations now. Even starting off at the GPU the 4070 Super uses the smaller AD104 die, unlike the 1080 Ti which had the top-spec GP102 inside of it. These also have a massive process difference, the Ada card cutting down to just 5nm from 16. That also leads to many more cores able to fit onto the die as the Pascal card only had 3,584 at the top level unlike the 7,168 of the Ada GPU.
Along with minimizing the size, the clock speeds have also massively improved. The frequency at which they run is much more overclocked compared to the 1080 Ti. The base clock of the 4070 Super is even higher than the boost allowing the core to run that much faster.
The memory may not seem too different at first but there are plenty of improvements there too. Upping from 11 to 12GB isn’t too much difference and in that time it becomes not enough for current demands. Even though the technology has improved up to GDDR6X, the 70 Super doesn’t utilize its full potential. As it is limited to a 192-bit bust and has a bandwidth of only 504GB/s. Whereas the 1080 Ti opens up the 5X with a 352-bit bus it still could only manage 11Gbps so its bandwidth still falls behind at 484GB/s.
To round off the features, we can see what the generations improved in efficiency as well. The 4070 Super can run all its features with only a 220W rating, whereas the 1080 Ti requires a 250W power input, even if they might run on the same power supply, the performance is wildly different.
Since the GTX 1080 Ti is old in terms of hardware, it’s very uncommon to find it being used in any benchmarks. Since we have not yet got hands-on with the 4070 Super, we can’t compare the two directly just yet.
However, Testing Games on YouTube has compared the 1080 Ti vs 4070 and we can base the Super on that. In those tests, we can see that the 4070 is nearly twice as good as the 1080 Ti. With an average of 43 vs 84 FPS in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. 39 and 72 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, 53 and 99 in RDR2, and so on. That means you should expect the 4070 Super to also be around two times better than the 1080 Ti.
This will also vary depending on the game and utilization. As the likes of Alan Wake 2 require ray tracing support and since the 1080 Ti is a GTX card, it does not have native ray tracing cores to allow for it to get good lighting performance. It also lacks support for any DLSS upscaling, whilst the 4070 Super has access to even DLSS 3 so it can run even higher in certain games and push its potential whilst the 1080 Ti is such with its own performance or other upscalers like FSR.
Comparing the launch prices of the two cards, we find that the 4070 Supe in fact is cheaper than the 1080 Ti. The 4070 Super price came to be $599, whereas the 1080 Ti was launched at $699. However, this many years on, the GTX 1080 Ti can be found for around $300 on Amazon right now, whilst if you’re looking where to buy the 4070 Super, you’re going to have to pay around double that as it can be found for over $600. So although the 4070 Super should be 14% cheaper, it does come over 100% more.

Yes the RTX 4070 Ti is much better than the 1080 Ti, not only should it be getting over double the performance but enjoy all the extra features available on the newer hardware. With the efficiency increases and capabilities, you do get a lot more out of it that will last you quite some time yet before it becomes obsolete. Let’s be honest, the 1080 Ti is becoming now as it has been surpassed for years. But looking to upgrade your 1080 Ti, the 4070 Super is a top choice for the job.
