What is the latest Android version? (full release)

The latest full version of the Android operating system to be released is Android 13. This will be the case until we hit the Android 14 release date.

The stable, public version of Android 13 was released on 15th August 2022. The expect to see Android 14 arrive at a similar time of year, though it has historically been anywhere between August and October. Android 13 brought in design changes, updated quick settings, notifications permissions, privacy and security updates and much more to all phone manufacturers operating on the latest Android version, such as Google’s own Pixel, OnePlus, and Samsung Galaxy phones.

The latest Android 13 QPR stable release

Google releases Quarterly Platform Releases (QPRs) for Android 13 roughly every 3 months. These are updates to the full release which include bug fixes, optimizations, and some additional functionality for the current version of Android.

The last full QPR public release was Android 13 QPR3, which came out on the 13th June 2023. That means we should soon be moving up to the QPR4 beta soon, so it will be a few months before the next stable QPR.

Now if you’re looking for the most up to date Android versions, you need to check out one of the betas. As always though, Android betas are reserved for those of you with a Google Pixel smartphone (or now tablet). The list of Pixel phones which are compatible include:

• Pixel 6 / Pixel 6 Pro / Pixel 6a
• Pixel 7 / Pixel 7 Pro
• Pixel 7a / Pixel Fold / Pixel Tablet (Android 14 beta)

Keep in mind that support for the base Pixel 4a is being dropped if you’re interested in downloading Android 14 (or its betas) in future, though the 5G model will still be supported. The beta versions introduce bug fixes and new features for you Android device, you can install them if you’re part of the Android Beta for Pixel program. There are currently two betas to concern yourself with below.

The latest Android 13 QPR beta

The most recent QPR beta was QPR3 Beta 3.2, which came with a bunch of fixes – which you can read about here. It was released in May 2023. Of course, this is part of the QPR3 Beta 3 stage, which initially released to phones on April 20th, 2023. This was obviously a bigger step compared to the more incremental 3.2, and it brought changes such as a button navigation redesign and plenty of fixes to Wi-Fi calling, system UI crashes, and a camera black screen. Now that we’ve reached reached the full QPR3 version, we await QPR4 beta 1 in the coming months.

The latest Android 14 beta

The latest Android 14 beta is Android 14 beta 5. We’ve been keeping track of the Android 14 beta release date, and beta 5 recently released on August 10th. This means they have reached the final beta version, sometimes referred to as the release candidate. Developer APIs are finalized, as well as app-facing behaviors. This is a milestone which means we’re are incredible close to the full release.

Previously, Android 14 beta 3 brought new features such as a new charging indicator and customizable lock screen – which allows you to change wallpaper, interface and shortcuts (like the flashlight or QR code scanner) before you’ve even hit the home screen. Beta 4 & beta 5 on the other hand weren’t massive front-facing updates – just plenty of back-end bug fixes and optimizations, but that’s to be expected as we’re incredibly close to final release – it’s just finishing touches now.
