The next Android 14 beta release: Will there be an Android 14 beta 6?

What is the latest Android version? Well before we get to the full public Android 14 release date, we have to go through the beta releases, and we’re currently on Beta 5, which means you would assume beta 6 is coming. Well, as Android reveal in their beta 5 blog post, we are currently at the final beta release (or release candidate), ready for the launch of Android 14 fully within weeks.

We don’t think there will be an Android 14 beta 6 at all – as one is not officially scheduled. Considering OnePlus have already released their OxygenOS 14 (which is based on Android 14), the final version is clearly ready to ship – and is expected to do so at the ‘Made by Google’ event scheduled for October 4th.

So far, everything was outlined in the official Android 14 roadmap, and is visualized in the chart below along with when subsequent Android 14 betas arrived. Google started in February with the Developer Previews, but now we’ve hit the platform stability stage before the final release sometime during or after late August.

Android 14 beta 5 release date – beta 5 is out now

The most recent news to come from the Android 14 beta program is the release of beta 5 on August 10th! Google’s official Android Developers Blog post is where you want to head for an official word on the release. As stated, this is the last scheduled update for the Android 14 beta program, so we don’t expect to move on to beta 6 – as Android 14 is just ‘weeks away’. Beta 5 is a time for developers to finalize compatibility testing and push their app updates in time for the full release of Android 14.

Android 14 beta 4 release date – beta 4 is out now

Android 14 beta 4 is now here – and it marks the 2nd ‘platform stability’ release. Yet again, Google made this official over on their Android Developers Blog on July 11th as beta 4 dropped. They say that they’ve been working on polishing the latest OS and making sure the performance is up to scratch. Beta 4 is also available on the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold now that they are released.

Android 14 beta 3 release date – beta 3 is out now

The latest is that Android 14 beta 3 was released on June 7th, you can read about it on the Google blog. As more and more beta versions get released, features begin to be implemented. Perhaps one of the key takeaways though is that Android has reached the ‘Platform Stability’ stage of the timeline. What this means is that the developer APIs and app-facing behaviors are finalized. This marks an important milestone, especially for Android app developers.

Google I/O revealed a bunch of new features coming to Android, and beta 3 has introduced one of the most anticipated – lock screen customization. Before you even hit the home screen, you can customize elements such as the background, font, lock screen clock, or rearrange widgets such as the weather or date.

Android 14 beta 2 release date – beta 2 is out now

Beta 2 is here to take a look at! We previously said below that the beta 1 news is the most important, but now we can forget about it in favor of checking out the Android 14 beta 2. Of course, beta 1 was a big step out of the developer previews. Beta 2 arrived alongside the Google I/O event on May 10th. This was officially announced by Google in this blog post.

Android 14 beta 1 release date – beta 1 is out now

The most important news of all is that the Android 14 beta 1 is now available. This Reddit post and dev blog goes through all the details, both of which dropped on April 12th. The announcement notes that Android 14 focuses on improvements to privacy, developing, customization, and large screen support. You can even get involved and provide some valuable feedback if you take part in testing Android 14 beta 1. One more important thing to add is that they revealed there’ll be more to see at Google I/O, which is on May 10th.

How to sign up to the Android 14 Developer Preview

Signing up for the Android 14 Developer Preview can be a complex process for those who are not technologically adept when it comes to phones. We’d advise the majority of people to avoid doing this, as it comes with risks of wiping data from your phone / damaging your device if you don’t know what you’re doing.

If you are determined, however, the good people over at Android Police have put together a great guide on the subject, detailing the different ways you can go about this. Alternatively, the Android site itself has a more stripped-down guide. This is no longer necessary though, as the public beta releases are already out.

What does the Android 14 beta change?

The first release of the beta had a few changes to your operating system. With improvements to support tablets and foldable factors, mainly for development purposes. Along with changes to a smarter system UI. The implementation of a new back gesture / back arrow, included in gesture navigation helps improve understanding and usefulness. Along with a superior share sheet, it should be easier to share things wherever you need.

There are also improvements to the graphical capabilities, so apps can stand out more, with the introduction of Path API. More personalization is added with per-app language preferences rather than it being system-wide. Added privacy to limit visibility to disability-focused accessibility services.

How to upgrade to Android 14?

The full release of Android 14 is later down the line, so it’s not currently possible to upgrade to the full version just yet. However, you can opt in to the early versions ahead of time.

If you can’t wait until the final public release of Android 14 (expected sometime in Q3 2023), then you can sign up to the public beta now that beta 1 & beta 2 have been released.
