Nvidia RTX 4090 size – 4090 clearance issues

Higher TDPs mean bigger cooling and so you have to then consider if it will even fit in your case.

With the new RTX 40 series, we saw an increase in the power consumption of the cards. And with that, we’ve seen the new RTX 4090 size, which may end up causing some clearance issues for you. The new range of cards was announced on the 20th of September and with it, the new behemoth was showcased. Following on from the RTX 3090 Ti released earlier the same year, it also comes with a 450W board power.

All that to power the 608mm² die with 16,384 CUDA cores. This also results in a higher thermal waste that the cooling solution of the card has to deal with. And so it leads to the evergrowing size of air coolers on the GPUs. So now the Founder’s Edition Nvidia 4090 comes in at a size of 304 x 137 x 61 mm. Take up 3 slots of your motherboard. With other air-cooled custom cards likely bigger. and we do see the ROG Strix 4090 coming in at a size of 357.6 x 149.3 x 70.1 mm.

Will the RTX 4090 fit in my case?

Even the last generation RTX 30 series was massive itself. And that caused some clearance issues already in smaller tighter cases. So it’s no surprise that a further increase in the size of the 4090 will cause you some issues.

So when it comes to planning out your build you will have to pay attention to all the dimensions. If you are planning a mid/full-tower build your main concern will be GPU length. The slot size won’t matter, and they will keep the width in line to fit cases.

But when it comes to the length it can become tighter. A case like the 4000D has the option to have a radiator in front. And right now it only supports a 360mm length, so trimming that down means the Strix is unlikely to fit in it anymore. Or at least it will be very tight which may cause airflow issues.

With cases that display your GPU with a riser, like the Hyte Y60 you do have to worry about the slots more. It only supports a GPU length of up to 375mm, so that would be fine. But it supports a thickness of up to 75mm and only recommends up to 60mm for best cooling as it still needs fresh air to make its way in. So although both 4090’s mentioned can fit in neither is ideal for airflow, another major consideration for your build.

Now MATX is even smaller and more unlikely to fit those longer cards. So it really is down to check the compatibility. With the cases likely writing out their technical specifications on product pages to make sure you’re not making any mistakes.
